Overall, Trine 4 is a fantastic, beautiful and extremely enjoyable game to play.
Originality may not have been high up on the list of priorities by the time this fourth outing rolled around but everything, from the sumptuous visuals to the audio, everything is tip top. For people who have played previous Trine titles, this one may be the best one yet. It’s a remarkably solid side scrolling title and what seems to be a welcome change from the ill-fated Trine 3. I didn’t honestly think Trine 4 would enrapture me as much as it has, particularly when tackling the multiplayer.
If you’ve played and enjoyed and title in the Trine franchise before, you’re very likely to love this one, so grab a few friends and enjoy.

Trine 4 goes back to using a 2.5D presentation, but various elements got changed up.
For one thing the physics system isn't like in the first 2 games, as the devs have utilized some elements from the 3rd game such as Amadeus being able to create boxes with the press of a key (you can still create it using mouse) as well as Zoya's rope mechanics from Trine 3, to name a few.

Furthermore, puzzles can be solved utilizing all 3 characters and are not reliant solely on Amadeus. This I feel is one of the better improvements in this game. I cannot remember many puzzles from the first 2 games at least that needed me to rely on the other two to solve, but this time even with Amadeus being needed to move objects around, Zoya and/or Pontius will be needed to clear certain puzzle or platforming sections.

The combat in the game is similar to the first 2, while Pontius is the go to fellow here, Amadeus has been given better combat options allowing him to slam objects onto enemies as well. I played with Easy combat difficulty but there can be some tricky parts in normal encounters.

The game also has around 5 or so bosses and they incorporate some puzzle-y elements as well though they weren't too frustrating, relying on the player to remember patterns in order to defeat them.

The Music and Visuals are on point as well in this game; ever since Trine 2, Frozenbyte have been creating lovely looking worlds to explore in the series (the dozens of amateur screenshots I took are one testament to that) and this game is no exception, moreso if you are able to downsample or apply alternative AA to the game.
The game's music is calm and relaxing, which contemplates the puzzle solving to not make you stress out much on them. I know it's not much to say, but if you liked the music from the earlier games, you're bound to like them here.

The game has as many stages as the first game (around 18 or so) interestingly enough, and can still be played co-op of course, allowing up to 4 players being able to switch to any of the 3 heroes.

All in all this is a solid and worthy entry in the Trine series. I personally like Trine 3, but understand the criticisms the game suffers from, so if that game disappointed you, I think Trine 4 will win you back.

Trine 2 is in my top 5 games list and I am so pleased to be able to say that this latest installment is an absolute joy to play and definitely up there with its predecessor! The return to 2.5D was one of the best things Frozen Byte could have done after the debacle that was Trine 3. I have not experienced any issues whatsoever with camera angles, character gameplay orientation or any other of those weird glitchy effects.

The puzzles are fun and done in typical Trine fashion, some more straightforward than others with most having several solution methods meaning you aren't always forced into only playing one or other character to progress. The skill acquisition and abilities are paced well with both story and difficulty progression and combat can be challenging but not overly so. Those I played with had issues with their saved games not saving their collections and skill point allocations but as the host it seemed I was spared that frustration.

If you're a fan of adventure/exploration, puzzles and RPG's you're sure to love this, best money I have spent on entertainment in an extremely long time! Thank you everyone at Frozen Byte for providing us with another gem, once again showing the industry that it doesn't have to be about size provided you know how to use it.

Trine is always a fantastic game that is amazingly fun to play with friends. Get it for sure if you're looking for a co op fun game that's not too heavy, but still very entertaining and challenging.

NOTE ABOUT MULTIPLAYER: There's a bug in the game that will reset all your progress if you use the Steam interface to join, so only do that on a "fresh" start.

SOLUTION: If you decide to co-op, ONLY use the Steam interface to invite someone to your game for the first time in the start of the play-through. All other subsequent times, the joining player should go to "Continue Game", choose the last save, and an option at the bottom should appear "Join last host" if the Host player has created the game.

This game is... Fabolous. Literally and figuratively too.
The graphic details, the visual enviroment, the audios: the marvellous melodies and the cool effects,
the characters and their moving and skills. Great new features.
And the story? It's well-structured, spiced with appropriate humor and a few cuties.
The puzzles are not easy as earlier, but just so perfect!
Excellent sequel of the serie. Strongly RECOMMENDED. It worth even without on sale.

Sometimes I'm sorry I'm not a kid anymore. What an experience it would be to immerse in such a dream world! Now I'm 46 y/o, nevertheless I was 'Enchanted'.

I have played all until act III and my impressions of the game are beyond expectations. It's a return to the classic 2.5 formula so if it enjoyed Trine 1 & 2 you are surely to fall in love with this title. Anything from the improved graphics to the breathtaking soundtrack creates an immersive experience. The puzzles are interesting and show that the devs really put some thought behind what is undoubtedly the ultimate Trine experience.

However this game has a few drawbacks when you compare it to Trine 1 & 2. Firstly, the lack of hard or hardcore difficulty makes the game lose some of it's replayability value, as well as the lack of any unique achievements to unlock. Plus the characters' movement feels somewhat "choppy" compared to the former titles in the series.

Overall, it's a fantastic game and all of it's shortcomings can be summed as nitpicks rather than actual cons. This game, in my opinion, is near perfect, and I can't wait to finish it.

Trine 4 is a very forgiving and reasonably enjoyable 2D puzzle platformer. It sees the 3 heroes of the earlier Trine Adventures on a search for a missing Prince. Objectively I think if you like jumping around looking for hidden gems and treasures you will have fun. If that is not your thing you might find it a little monotonous. There are some enemy to fight along the way but they are not particularly strong and you just try again if you fail. There were a couple of boss fights that were a little more interesting. This actually suits me so I personally really liked the game. And graphics are unbelieveably beautiful. Price is a little high for the game time unless you are a fan of the series, definitely worth getting on sale.

The puzzles are generally okay, but there are some nuances.
The game feels stretched out,a round 10 hours of similar puzzles start to get tedious towards the end.
Previous chapters of Trine, seemed shorter, and that worked in their favor.

The combat was also not very pleasing, with too simple enemy clicking which could have been bearable for a few hours but not for more than 10 hours.
In games like this, there's not much point in focusing on the plot; here, it simply exists.

Additionally, the final boss on hard difficulty was a bit suffocating. The game turned out to be decent in its genre, but due to its length, it required effort to push oneself to finish it.

After a couple of silent years that followed the confusing release of Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power, Frozenbyte returned with yet another entry in the beloved, fairytale-puzzle-platformer series. It really seemed like the mixed reception of their previous Trine game, which supposedly came to be under a threat of bankruptcy, motivated the developers to double down on its successor, so not only it would feel like a finished product, but also redeem all of its older brother’s faults and add something new for the fans to chew on. And then… they did all of that and even more, which can sound like a jaw-dropping feat for a game development team after 2015.

THE GOOD (and Holy Trine, there’s a lot of that)

• I don’t think this even needs to be talked about, because a simple glimpse into screenshots or gameplay footages can showcase it well enough, but the visuals are absolutely, astoundingly beautiful. All Trine games are gorgeous, but the fourth entry takes the graphics to yet another level. Colourful yet not too sugary, bright but not jarring, with sceneries like paintings and small details that complete those breathtaking views, all set in a clearly fairytale convention that beautifully exhibits both of its sides, the light-hearted happiness and darkness lurking around the corner.
  
• Not only Trine 4 looks great, it also presents us with a wide spectrum of environments, ranging from decrepit dungeons, through murky bogs filled with dangerous vegetation, to snow-ridden mountains and colourful, mythical forests. Every single one of these feels like a separate entity, bringing visual and auditory themes and elements of its own, yet still visibly belongs to the same, stunning universe. This way each level brings something new to the experience that doesn’t slow down to the very last minute. Oh, and there’s an enchanted bear there too! How sweet!
  
• Music is great. Themes playing in the background set the scenes really well, and are accompanied by equally good ambient sounds, making the world around you feel very lively and inviting (unless it’s something evil and twisted, then don’t touch it). I would even go as far as recommending buying the soundtrack if you have some spare pocket money, and that doesn’t happen often, believe me.
  
• Platformer elements altogether with multiple puzzles of varied difficulties prove that the developers crafted Trine 4 with thought of both casual players and more experienced fans of the genre. With three different characters in your roster, each having their own abilities and purposes, you can face the challenges thrown at you in multiple ways whilst never being asked to solve a riddle using a mysterious key that only the game creators got to learn. There’s also a very good balance of difficulty and complexity as it comes to puzzles – naturally, some will have to be harder in order to give you a sense of achievement proper to the overall progress, but there isn’t a lot of room for frustration here. Fun factor always wins in the end. Just mind the physics, gravity is always merciless.
  
• As mentioned before, the three heroes you’re given control of – Pontius, the valiant knight, Amadeus, the wise wizard and Zoya, the resourceful… entrepreneur, are different from each other (duh) and help you proceed with your important quest with various sets of skills. You start the game with just a couple of abilities, but as you progress and gain experience, both from combat and collecting magic vials scattered around the levels (are these vials?), you gain access to upgrades and completely new talents as well. There is enough variety to make the puzzles and battling enemies more entertaining. At the same time nothing is confusing here, as the abilities are easy to get used to, and you’re given enough time and space to practice all of them as well. Players’ control over the upgrade system is not suited for veterans of tactical games or advocates for gigantic skill trees, but its role here comes down to picking abilities you find most fun, since you cannot really go wrong in your choices. Very foolproof and intuitive, makes the game feel even more player-friendly.
  
• Everything in this game screams fairytale and what would a fairytale be without good narration and distinct characters? I don’t know and Trine 4 doesn’t give an answer to that question. Heroes and villains alike flesh out certain archetypes which are almost a must in an innocent story for all ages, and manifest well-fitting behaviours and distinctly marked habits. Voice actors make a great job making the characters lively and likable, and the narrator pushes the story forward (which we will return to later) with care, like grandpa telling a tale to his grandchildren. It just feels cosy.
  
• Multiplayer. Best with two friends, each playing a different hero. It really forces people to cooperate, while giving everyone something to do. No time for slacking!

THE COULD BE BETTER (like Amadeus could be a better wizard)

• Combat is what has never screamed greatness to me in Trine series, and this hasn’t really changed in the fourth instalment. It can be fun. It can also be extremely clunky when a cluster of enemies and projectiles, each moving in several directions at once, appears on the screen. Every battle, save the boss fights, looks more or less the same – shadowy platforms appear, actually impairing your movement more often than not rather than enabling extra manoeuvres, and shadowy creatures follow, rolling around like crazy, shooting you with arrows and magic… arrows and balls and things. Too much happens at once, in spaces that are too small. My biggest issue, though, is the lack of invulnerability frames whenever one of your controlled characters dies and you need to switch to another one. The redeeming quality that fishes this point from the depths of hell is that whenever the amount of enemies is balanced, combat becomes a game of dexterity, skill knowledge and experimenting. And there isn’t a lot of it in the first place… but it’s still more a chore than pleasure.
  
• The narration is good, characters, environments, friends and foes, ideas, everything clicks here. The one thing that makes it all a bit less enjoyable, though, is how the story develops. As a fan of a good old fairytale, I wish the plot consisted of more than just repeated episodes of following the eponymous villain, losing his track, finding him and then having him disappear for no good reason. Without expecting too much from the lore in a game heavily focused on the atmosphere and whatever goodness the platformer genre should bring, I’m still slightly disappointed that a lot of things seem to happen out of nowhere and vanish the exact same way.

THE BAD section should also be here… if I actually had anything bad to say about the game. But I don’t think forcing myself to find anything to fill this gap would be fair towards the developers and the game itself. It’s not perfect, it has its flaws, absolutely, but those are minor things, unsubstantial to the overall enjoyment of the game, completely negligible in the big picture.

OVERALL

It’s the best game in the series. Trine 4 improved a lot not only on its direct predecessor – which I, personally, enjoyed – but also on other elements that had appeared even earlier. It is a platformer game, it is a puzzle game, it is a story game, it is neither overwhelming with excessive mechanics nor too simple. It’s good for new and veteran players alike and can serve both as a brain training and a virtual stroll in a park. But most importantly it is a sign of greatness we can expect from the future releases set in Trine universe.
