Player 1 needs to move the character in the main menu to the right (player 2 should not touch any buttons at this point) using the controller or the keyboard, depending on what player 1 wants to use for playing. Only after this player 2 should press Start (if using a controller) or F3 (if using KB+mouse).
I'm very sorry about the inconvenience and the wait, thank you all for the reports and your patience!
I played the game through in local with my bro. I was on gamepad (steam controller).
I finished the tutorial via gamepad, though. Then, when the story started, I just pressed start on gamepad and it connected the second player.
So, gamepad was controlling player 2 after that.
When I accidentally disconnected (pressing wrong button), it just opened the main menu when start was pressed. But after a few seconds and running right to left, it made player 2 connect again.
We do have a QA department, but unfortunately this issue did not occur in our tests, despite the long testing period and having outside play testers as well. We're very sorry about the disappointment and the inconvenience this has caused to many players, and we are working hard to find a fix as soon as possible.
Good to know that you are working to fix the problem so we all can enjoy the local co-op with our significant (or insignificant ;)) ones. Hope you'll release the patch fixing this problem soon!
Unfortunately, we are still pretty small business with only handful of people at QA. It would be great if we had page after page of test cases that were checked for each and every release candidate build, but that's not really possible. It is unfortunate that these things happen, but we'll try to fix it as soon as possible.

I know how hard is to develop games but every Trine game since 1 have problems with controllers. At this point maybe you have to put some common and usual basic rules about controls on the table so your dev team learn how to deal with more than one player and more than one input method.
Sorry that the join logic has been unclear, it is so familiar to us from previous games that this is something we probably overlooked. :)
