No Stereoscopic 3D, no buy
It was SO fun to play Trine 2 and 3 in stereo 3D with a VR headset. Very disappointed to see support removed.

This is a huge unique selling point for the series that has been taken out.

Agreed. I was just searching for info to see if stereoscopic 3D support was continued. Extremely dissapointed to learn that it's apparently not. While I do have a VR headset, I actually play the first 3 on a large 4K 3DTV and they are absolutely glorious. Once you experience them in stereoscopic it's hard to imagine playing them any other way.

Devs, please Please PLEASE re-add stereoscopic support! Don't listen to the 3D haters that would prefer to deprive those of us that still love the format.

Sorry, unfortunately there are no plans to add stereoscopic 3D support to Trine 4 at the moment. This has been discussed at length in this thread before: https://steamcommunity.com/app/690640/discussions/0/1770385542781878395/ NVidia unfortunately ended their 3D Vision support in April 2019, which impacts us too as developers.

I hadn’t read that thread. The SBS (side by side) stereoscopic format (which the previous Trine games supported) requires zero support from NVIDIA via 3D Vision, or any other graphics card manufacturer for that matter. All modern stereoscopic displays and projectors and VR HMD’s support the SBS format (as well as Over/Under) natively. So NVIDIA dropping 3D Vision doesn’t impact the Trine dev’s *ability* to support stereo 3D if they wanted to do so. Clearly you don’t. Which is really too bad.
Those of us that love the stereoscopic format may not be in the majority but there are more than few of us as threads similar to this demonstrate. No matter, the Trine devs have clearly demonstrated they have no desire to support it. So be it.

While Nvidia's decision to drop support doesn't affect our technical ability to add stereo 3D support, it does affect expected return on investment. We got quite a bit of visibility via Nvidia for previous games (Trine 2 particularly) and the fact that Nvidia was pushing S3D meant we could expect it had future. We don't have resources to make market or what's trending studies. It's obvious that Nvidia doesn't see bright future for S3D, and they are in much better position to make that conclusion than we are.

You make it sound like we are making an arbitrary decision just because we want _not_ to support stereo 3D. In reality it was pretty clear over a year ago that we don't have resources to get everything we'd like to do done for new renderer by the time Trine 4 is released. Even finding a good enough graphics coder to help, instead of hinder the progress in that time frame is challenging. Very simply put, if we had pursued S3D for Trine 4 launch, the renderer would be missing rather important features and optimizations (e.g. at one point not that long ago RTX 2080 Ti couldn't keep at 60 FPS at 1440p resolution, without SSAA).

There are still pretty important pieces missing or unoptimized and Trine 4 is not the only project we are pursuing. Starbase has very different requirements from Trine 4, and our graphics coders have to address those requirements too. Our artists would love to have some features currently missing (for all projects) and consoles could also use more optimizations. PS4 version doesn't make any use Pro model, simply because we had no time to enable even the most trivial support.

We would love to be in a situation where we could seriously consider doing non-critical features. Trine 4 is now out, so we are getting there. Unfortunately the list of non-critical stuff is long, and stereo 3D isn't on top of it (neither is Vulkan renderer or Linux or Mac port, before anyone asks). Like I've written before, it probably mostly depends on if and when we do VR support (for Starbase), but I don't know how much that is really considered.

Whether Trine 4 has any change to get that update will depend on quite many things. Basically, as long as we decide to release updates, Trine 4 codebase will keep up with the other projects, including any renderer updates. After that, it will depends on if and when there's going to be Trine 5, and how we decide to develop it (how much of use of Trine 4 codebase will be made). Predicting those things is getting really hazy, as other projects will have effect on that too.

TL;DR: We are Trine to do our best, but we got to pay the bills too and get games out (more or less) on schedule.

I understand your dilemma. Just chiming in as a +1 to 3d. Just saw your Trine 4 as a similar to another game page I was on, and immediately thought "I hope it's in 3d...but doubt it". If it does get 3d support, insta-buy from me. But I understand I may not be the majority...

Cool response from the developers there, thanks for so much detail!

Thank you very much for this detailed and honest answer!

There are not many developers, who talk to their customers that openly.
Wish you all the best! :cozybethesda:
