Need idiot instructions for HOTAS recognition (Solved)
Got my Rift a year ago.... held off on VR games since they were so new. Used VorpX to experience some VR Skyrim, Arkham City, etc.

After using it quite successfully on Elite Dangerous/Horizons for some time I decided to get EVE Valkyrie seeing as it became a more public format and the fact it was created for the Rift.

Went and bought a Saitek(Logitech)X56 and Valkyrie doesn't see it. I'm not going to use either a keyboard/mouse or an Xbox controller (although I did plug my xbox/Rift controller in per EVE support page).

I've read so many posts trying to figure this on my own my eyes are bleeding, so I throw myself on the mercy of my co-gamers hoping for some insight. Posts from EVE tech support seem to skirt the issue directly with typical blanket info, nothing specific. Saying yes it works without having some post explaining issues or steps to take doesn't really help me.

I have a limited time to get this info or I'll end up making my very first steam refund request... shame really, but I'd much rather have a working HOTAS like others appear to have.

TLDR: request player information with specific instruction on setting up a working HOTAS.
System is oculus ready, using Rift and trying to get X56 to work. EVE tech support need not reply.

Sorry to hear you are having problems. This article shows an image of the Saitek HOTAS so ideally it should be recognizable.

Are you able to use mouse and keyboard to navigate to the settings menu? Once there you should be able to see the Controls option to customize the HOTAS setup.

A similar issue happened here and seemed to get resolved.

Hopefully something here will be of help. Please report back if not.

For my 17 year old flight stick (a Saitek Cyborg 3D Gold) what I needed to do to make it work was to go to setting->Joystick Settings -> Devices (is in the shorter list below all the bindings) and there select the stick to be used.

Thx for taking the time to help...

Orion, I have seen both of those pages, but thankyou for linking them for myself and anyone else checking this thread.

Hoshi, your reply made me look harder at the options and yes, thankyou for helping me look at the star (devices) that appears in joysticks earlier, as the star (credits) that appears in gameplay. DUH! Your reference to the 'shorter' list is the headslap I needed.

For anyone else following this my steps were:
Options (gear icon)
default Gameplay wheel (controller icon)
Joysticks
bottom of page select devices (star icon)
X56 Rhino found and able to be selected for binding options

Thanks again
Steam players rock!

Well, I'm very glad that someone with HOTAS issues got it figured out. I haven't been so fortunate. The game sees my Logitech G940 system as three separate devices; stick, pedals and throttle. But for some reason I cannot bind all the axis. In fact, out of 14 axis only 4 of them show up when trying to bind, 2 on the stick and 2 on the throttle which, ironically aren't even practical to use. All of the buttons seem to work but most of the axis do not.

Pedals seems to come up a lot in HOTAS discussions, as well as the number of axis that seem bindable per application.

When you click the star/devices icon at the bottom of the joystick binding menu, does the game properly name your peripheral? (Logitech G940) Also are you running any software that came with the device while trying to map/recognise it?
- I had to select both of my joysticks (stick and throttle) from the device wheel and while they both used the same name the inputs were properly labled when binding. I also kept the HOTAS software running.

Because of USB standards and increased number of ports added lately, have you tried different combinations of where each are plugged in?
- I make sure all my 'needy' devices are plugged into the USB ports with the 'blue' plastic visible(these are the 3.0 hubs I believe).

As for my multiple axis's, after about an hour or so of 'tweaking', the main 3 were bound proper (yaw/pitch/roll) as well as the curves adjusted since I'm not using a XBox controller. This is where either the controller itself, or the software they write for it really show their stuff. I did have to map EVERY single controller command somewhere on my stick/throttle since Xbox controller software knows when to use the same button for menu sensitive/contexual commands. This ate up every single axis on my x56 - 3 hats and thumb on stick, as well as 3 thumbs on throttle.

Given this was made for the Rift and 'their' XBox style controller which is included, I probably could've used my single joystick and keyboard (XBox controllers feel small in my hands, gives me cramps after awhile and I feel handcuffed), but I was stubborn and wanted to upgrade to the HOTAS.
