Choosing commanders for a mission

Okay, maybe I'm an idjit, but is there a way to choose which units you start any particular mission with? I have 5 commanders, but only the first 4 are used (3 if an island has a new unit on it), and I'd like to be able to select which commanders/units are sent on each mission/island.

if you're on PC/Mac, click on the commander's profile you want to replace and a menu will popup with your other commanders.

I see the other commanders, but cant find a way to change what order they're in, or how to use only 2 commanders on a mission instead of all 4. Am I missing something?

Best way is to click an island, Clock on Each potrait and click the x to clear the slots and then add each one in the other you want and how many
