While Soldiers work best with the warhorn to replace losses against archers and brute archers. While on pikemen I don't find it neccesary.
While both warhammer and bomb are good on soldiers and pikemen. While on archers you risk losing them in melee combat if you miss
Keep in mind you get 2 of each item from 8 islands if you successfully defend them.
Archers:
Infantry:
Pikemen:
Alot of players, including me, like the Ring of Command on their archers. Fully upgraded it's OP as heck. I play archers very aggressively. They are always firing on boats from the edge of the shore. As soon as the mobs land, archers behind the pikes/infantry for the stun and push back. With 16 archers firing from one square away, they often send mobs into the water with their stun/knockback.
I used to put Ring of Command on my pikes. I hate sending them to replenish cause once you turtle up or hold a chokepoint, it seems you end up there for several waves of mobs. This is especially true on the final island. I now use War Horn fully upgraded for my pike. It's much handier than the Ring.
Infantry it's always either hammer or horn. I prefer hammer but the war horn works fine.
I never use the bomb. It's just a matter of playstyle. I can't say the bomb is bad or good. I wouldn't know. The items I use work just fine so I see no need to even try the bomb.
Edit: bear in mind that any units with the Ring of Command will take twice as long to replenish. This is the main reason I only put the Rings on archers.
1-Pikemen. 2-Archers. 3-Swordmen.
Hammer: My fave upgrade: Good on all. Knock whole squads of even giants and redshields into the water, even archers can pull this off with a beach ambush before running away, time it well!
1/2-Pikement and Swordmen. 3-Archers.
Reenforcements: Swordmen get worn down over combat so for them this is the most routinely useful. Pikemen however are important and this lets you refresh them a bit with no downtime. Archers rarely take many casualties and this fixes them when they do.
1-Swordmen. 2-Pikemen. 3-Archers.
Bomb: Rather unreliable, flat out worse then hammer in my mind. Any unit can use to disrupt enemies a bit and swordmen tend to move the most.
1-Swordmen. 2/3-Pikemen and Archers.
If you get an early bomb, dont put it on pikemen if you see another upgrade soon, you'dd rather wait a bit and get anything else for your pike unit than waste the slot on bomb.
If you get early command ring, hold onto it for your pikemen unit. Dont upgrade it till you finish get elite.
You can put hammer on anything immediately, one of the best upgrades for those flat lategame islands.
If you get early reenforcements put it on your swordmen.
If you get an early-second command ring, try to have one unit of Command ring Sword and Pikemen each, training one of your backups is worth it for this.
I've stopped using archers, in my opinion even tho I put Archers as "gaining the second most" from Command ring i'dd still rather put it on Swordmen then Archers, simply because even though the archers "gain more" the unit is still so much crap that the swordmen will always be better.
