Just play the freeware version of T2K called Typhoon 2001 instead...
It pained me to write a negative review of this, but after so many years of playing Dave Theurer's excellent freeware game Typhoon 2001 (based on the Jaguar version of Tempest 2000, made with permission from Jeff Minter), I can honestly say T4k is quite a downgrade. If you haven't already tried it just google the title, and enjoy the true definitive version fo Tempest 2000 for PC! It also includes all the levels from the original Tempest 1981 arcade game as a bonus. And has customizable visuals, and full keyboard, mouse, and *spinner support. Finally, it's FREE, so it's obviously the clear winner here. I'll probably wait till just before my Steam refund window ends, just in case YAK is able to issue patch fixes, but I'm dubious that will happen due to Atari.

Wow i never knew about this game. Funny thing is i made a thread on here saying how the graphics of Tempest 4000 look worse than Tempest 2000 on Jag, and i just watched a few Youtube vids of this Typhoon and THIS is what i expected from a new Tempest game, gorgeous looking.

EDIT. The camera is a bit annoying though, the way the whole screen moves when you move left and right.

I actually LOVE the camera in Typhoon! The camera in T4k feels so zoomed out, and away from the action.

No i mean how the whole screen turns around when you move left and right, insted of the webs staying stationary. It says its an option you can change in the settings though according top that vid.

Gotcha. Yes, it's in the README file when you download it:
PageUp: Zoom in
PageDown: Zoom out
Esc: Exit
P: Pause

F1: Turn on camera movement
F4: Turn off camera movement

F5: Web based camera rotation
F6: Center based camera rotation
F8: Turn off camera rotation

WHY does T4k not have these as an option!!! Ugh, so sad. But enjoy Typhoon!

... i love this features too (played thpoon a lot) ... but in tempest4000 (in later levels) camera movements are part of the gameplay. ... it is another evolvement of tempest (with a xbox360 controller) ...love it! ...greetings

Thanks for the introduction to Typhoon. (How did I never know about this?)

I'd say it certainly has a different feel to TxK/T4K, not just aesthetically but also being that it's immediately very fast and aggressive. I mean, that's fantastic; but I dunno if it quite scratches the same itch for me.

I can definitely see going back to this for a more raw, 'stable' Tempest experience after all the mindscrew sensory overload tactics T4K pulls. :D (wouldn't be a Llamasoft game without them though.)

For me typoon fills the gap from T2000 (playstation) until the release of this beauty/gem ...

After 10h playtime i think T4000 levels are better designed (nearly each level has its own taktics/mechanics) and placing of extras is also well designed ...this game is so awesome and getting better with every hour of playtime and taking the player into 'the zone'.
Even the ammount of effects corrosponds to the gameplay and is not a totally sensory overload ...

greetings :)

and your opinion on t3k and txk

Tempest 4000 looks a 1000 times better than the jag version ! Fact ! And I own a jag with a "scart" RGB cable and running at 60Hz refresh rate and it's still not even close to how great Tempest 4000 looks ! I've played the jag ver to completion many times so I know Tempest 2000 on the jag !

Typhoon 2001 is great as well and my spinner works with it because it has "mouse" support , Typhoon 2001 plays diff than the jag ver and it looks better than the jag ver BUT even Typhoon 2001 doesn't look as great as Tempest 4000 looks, It too is not even close to Tempest 4000 !

I've never played txk but I've watched many youtube videos of it and it looks pretty much the same as the jag ver with just a little more cool looking graphics thrown in, And there is no PC ver of it, Again txk is not even close to how great Tempest 4000 looks !

The only prob I have with Tempest 4000 is it has no spinner (mouse) support, Everything else works great including all the buttons on my home made spinner box, All Tempest 4000 really needs is support for a mouse in the game and my spinner would work...

Hey has anybody have Typhoon 2001 crash starting a new web with a little box saying...

"spawn_fx: out of bounds"

and after about 5 seconds you can click an OK button to continue but when the next web starts it's a blank screen and you have to end that game and start another one ???

I'm playing it on a Core 2 Quad Xeon X5470 Computer Windows 7 with a GTX Titan 6 Gb and 8 Gb of DDR3 DRAM PC3-17066 (2133MHz)

I've never seen that before and my computer never has any kind of crashes with any programs...
