So how different is this to, say, Tempest 2000.
I mean PLAYABLE differences. If it's just essentially the same game (only differences are graphical in nature), Im going to stick with T2000 until a sale comes up, otherwise, are there any worthwhile gameplay changes?

If you've played TxK its kind of a downgrade but IMO it's different enough from T2, yes its still a tempest game and not as differnt as Space Giraffe. Essentially in numerous minor annoying ways its inferior to TxK. Some nice changes to the enemies but it's all kind of rendered irrelevent due to really simple stuff like positioning the camera so far back from the web and the extra background stuff certain aspects of it just impinge on the forground too much. For me the reversed controls with no options to change them back to the same as TxK make it pretty much unplayable.

I am hoping they provide an update to allow for control mappings.

I actually have a modified Jaguar controller with a laser spinner for T2K. And I have a MAME cabinet with a metal laser spinner.

It'd be a shame to step backwards on the controls, even if everything is much improved as far as audio and visual aspects.

I understand they had to focus on the delivery and localizations; here is hoping that there is enough incentive made available to provide custom control bindings... I would love to play this as it was meant to be played with a real spinner!

Of course I am weird like that. I don't count much against the game as a result of the $20 price tag. It's a deal for the entertainment it provides.

Extra lives are every 100,000 (not 80,000 like TxK) & there's a Beauty powerup giving temporary invulnerabilty & 2x points on kills. There are supposed to be some new enemies also. Level 13 has this sphere that zips around the web & lays down a curtain of bullets if you don't kill it quickly. There is an enemy in TxK's level 13 which acts like this, but it's not as aggressive. The difficulty is raised a bit over TxK's.
Enemies in T4000 don't just appear as different colors of dots as they're getting ready to come out.

I just replayed Tempest X on my modded PSP (my jaguar is in storage) as well as TxK on my Vita after playing T4k a bit. I wish I had a Nuon, the only time I got to play T3K was one year at E3 sitting with Jeff in a tiny Nuon booth. :)

Tempest X is MUCH faster...power ups come BLAZING at you compared to T4k. everything is just faster and more frantic in TX, and that's how I remember T2K on Jag...this is still my favorite version and I love playing it on my PSP.

TxK, when I first got it felt slow compared to T2K/TX, but now it's SO SMOOTH and balanced compared to T4k and actually a bit more enjoyable to me than T2K now. The only downside to TxK over T4K is I do like all the visual enhancements and some of the later enemies. The Vita version is much preferred to the PC version of T4K on my Surface Book 2 with Xbox controller

T4K, the inertia of the controls...I am struggling with and overall it's the biggest gripe I have. Going to try the LT brake to see if that helps. All the things up above I agree with 100%.

Other than the controls I thought T4K was a little easier...that is until effing level 13...man I hate that level. :P

Right now my fay version of Tempest is the freeware Typhoon 2001 in no small part due to it having spinner (mouse) support, To me there is no other enjoyable way to play any version Tempest without a spinner because it was designed with one !

I bought Tempest 4000 to support Lamasoft BUT I've only played it briefly it's just not near as fun without my spinner ! But that's just me...

spinners are nice, spinners are great, but the original TEMPEST didn't have a laser spinner, and DEFENDER had no stick for control at all... it was buttons-only.

Have you played it with a spinner yet?

No I've only played the arcade machine with a spinner. Have you tried playing Polybius with a spinner? I don't know if it would work but that game is awesome.
