Solution to resolution mess?
The resolution selection does not include any useful resolutions like 1080p upwards. Keep returning to the game to see if fixed but no joy :( Any solution to this?

Really? I was able to select 1920x1080 right from the beginning. If you launch the game from your Steam library, choose Windows 10 and you should get a launcher window asking you what resolution and refresh rate you want to play in.

How strange, my resolution options range up to a maximum of 1600x1024@60hz! Tried all kinds of things to get access to other resolutions but no joy!?

Very strange indeed. Have you tried verifying the files through Steam or re-installing? I know some people were experiencing this issue a couple of years ago, but I thought it had been fixed since then. The launcher SHOULD show you every resolution that is available to you in Windows - including any DSR factor resolutions.

I assume your desktop is currently set to 1920x1080, correct? If that's your native desktop, then the Tempest launcher should definitely show it.

If a file check and/or re-installation doesn't work, maybe try enabling DSR in your card's control panel? Add like a x2 or x4 to your control panel list (but don't actually use it) and see if anything new pops up in Tempest's list.

Whats even weirder is that whilst everyone was having this issue a couple of years ago, I was just fine! Tried everything, even disconnected by Oculus Rift, thinking it might be picking this up as a second display. No luck, at all, tried everything :(

Just come back to the game and having this issue now! Did you ever resolve it?

Nope, sorry my friend, gave up in the end :(

Hi,
I just saw this in the YY forum ( is it you ,,a51 ? ) ..

I just tried lauching T4K from Steam from this very PC, that has WIN10 and a GTX1070 and shows all the possible resolutions ( including 4K ) , at the moment we have only one Tablet PC running WIN11 but can't handle 4K for sure so I can't make a test there.

Also just recently I restarted working on Steam after an "hiatus" I had troubles in getting all back in ( maybe it's was too long I wasn't using it ? ) cause "Steam security issues" I don't know what the heck they wanted ( in the end they sorted it out ) they just did not let me to log in ..

Anyway back to the problem "at the moment I have no idea" possibly "soon" we'll upgrade "a better machine to Win11" so we'll be able to test.

Also "for new things I am working on atm" I am planing to totally ditch/remove that "PC startup thing" and make it all start "in graphic mode" and have the options all controllable/selectable from there.

.. HOWEVER .. "I am already having BIG discussions" ( with some other people/etc. ) about video modes .. when I say "fullscreen video mode" I mean "a REAL video mode", I mean you want "1024x768" I am going to switch your GPU to output a video signal like that and I get "full control" of the display.

I mean "suppose you want to output to a DLP projector and you NEED let's say 1920x1080" you WANT "a fullscreen 1920x1080" NOT "something at resolution <whatever> stretched at 1920x1080".

So in essence I am "NOT" inclined to call "fullscreen" what some people calls "borderless window" .. because also suppose your desktop is 1920x1080 and they you say "Oh I'd like to go 4K ?" .. unless I switch to the REAL 4K video mode you tell me "how could I possibly do any borderless window bigger than 1920x1080 ?" ..

I can only make "anything smaller than that and it's a stretched window".

Anyway .. back to the topic .. at the moment "I have no idea why that happens", unless maybe your video card has "a ton and a half of video modes" I ran out of "space" to fill up my "list" ( that at the moment can't remember the logic but has a bit of a complex 'filtering logic' to avoid to display 400 or so different display modes ) ..

For future releases I plan to simplify/change all this but just saying for the moment I am NOT inclined to use "borderless windows" and call them "fullscreen" ;)

Cheers.

Hi,
also I replied some extra stuff you may try on YY , just to see if anything happens.

Cheers.

The problem for me is also when using the game on a HDTV rather than a monitor, I'll respond with more details on the YakYak forum, thank you!

WIN11 on a Sony Kd65-AG9 here: same problem. The hightes resolution I'm offered is 1280X1024. Also....the game won't start at all. It ends after the "Atari" intro...
I usually don't have any problems like these.
VGAglory Aug 2, 2022 @ 7:18am
Interestingly I'm running on a Sony too

Same problem with a tv connected as well. Resolution only goes up to 1440x900. I have a 4k tv (ru8000) connected to a windows 10 pc with an amd rx 6750 xt. Windows is at 300% scaling. But setting it to 100% doesn't seem to change anything.

Had the exact same problem with both Tempest and the Minotaur Arcade beta branch, found this thread and figured I'd drop a solution I stumbled into for the next person who runs into it. Try wiping your video drivers and do a fresh install. If you're using a Nvidia card, Geforce Experience provides an easy option to do so when performing a driver update or reinstall.

Didn't work for me, new resolutions appeared in the list, but still the highest resolution it lets me choose is 3840 x 1080.

RESOLUTION PROBLEM SOLVED!!! I've been having this same problem for several years. My setup is an LG G3 with a Nvidia 4090 GPU using an HDMI 2.1 cable. I have not tried this with a monitor but it should work the same for display port or HDMI using a monitor.

TLDR: The developer in this thread is completely correct - the list in Tempest 4000 can't handle the large number of video modes available on modern higher resolution displays and GPUs that are being reported by the GPU driver.

TO FIX THIS: Use the CRU.exe utility to delete the legacy resolutions from 'Standard Resolutions', 'Extension Blocks -> TV Resolutions', and uncheck all the boxes under 'Established Resolutions'. I deleted anything that wasn't 2k or 4K and left everything else.

IMPORTANT!! Make sure to export your current settings to a new bin file with CRU.exe so you can easily restore them BEFORE making any changes. I have two 'bin' files. I have one 'bin' file that I import for playing Tempest 4000 with CRU.exe, and a second 'bin' file which restores the resolution configuration to the original configuration prior to any of my changes with CRU.exe when I am done playing Tempest 4000. You likely can just run with the edited profile, unless you play old games that need these legacy resolutions like 1024x768.

DETAILED STEPS:

1) I am not an expert with the CRU.exe utility, so the first thing you want to do is hit the 'Export' button and create a new 'bin' file as a backup of your current settings. If you run into issues with the changes in other games, you can always restore to your original resolution configuration.

2) Make sure your active display is selected in the drop down menu of CRU.exe before making the changes. Also, if your display is listed twice with only one marked as '(*active)', make sure you make the same changes in both profiles using the drop down. Not sure why, but this was required for this to work using my setup.

3) Use the CRU.exe utility to delete the legacy resolutions from both 'Standard Resolutions' and 'Extension Blocks -> TV Resolutions', and uncheck all the boxes under 'Established Resolutions' in the main CRU.exe app window. I deleted anything that wasn't 2k or 4K and left everything else. If you use 3440X1440, then leave those entries intact and only delete the older lower resolutions.

4) Click the 'Export' button in CRU.exe and save it as Tempest4000Profile.bin or something similarly descriptive.

5) Then click 'OK' in CRU .exe to commit the changes and close the app.

6) Either use the 'restart64.exe' that's in the same folder as CRU.exe to restart your GPU driver or restart your PC. If you have 32 bit Windows, use 'restart32.exe' in the CRU.exe folder instead.

7) Start Tempest 4000 using Steam and select 'Run Tempest 4000 in Windows 10' option. Your max resolution and refresh will now be listed in the Tempest 4000 launch window. Let's GOOOOOOOO!!!! :)

If you guys run into problems let me know and I'll see if I can get it figured out. Please let me know if this works for your monitor or TV and enjoy Tempest 4000 once again in all of it's pixel bleeding beauty.

Cheers and happy gaming!!

PS: And a HUGE shoutout to the developer in this thread that provided the critical information that was needed to devise a solution. I would love to see the change proposed as a future update to the game so this workaround is not needed.
