is there a way to mine without breaking the floor on the level above? or are you stuck crafting and install flooring

There is not, but maybe I should add something like this.

When I was first starting out, I definitely got confused on what was happening when I mined out multiple floors.

But once I realized it was trivial to replace with 'dirt block walls' or 'cobble floors', it actually entirely made sense. Maybe even more sense than magically having floors left between layers that you've mined out?

Then further on, I realized you can build constructed walls (say from 'clay bricks', so it still basically free), and that can be used to make areas safe from being mined out, as the 'deconstruct walls' is an entirely different tool.

i usually take one level for ceiling, one for the rooms, one for the floor/ceiling, next to rooms ... that is, i interleave used floors with unused ones (and if needed to extract something, i place dirt block to replace it if required
