Emptying lakes and small bodies of water.
I've spent 20 hours so far and I am very impressed with this game. I've done this with no guides or tutorial videos, the thing I am most impressed with is how intuitive the game-play actually is.

so, there is a lake on my map and its about 4 z levels deep.

I have connected an underground plumbing system from the ocean to the center of my subterranean city (the water doesn't all freeze 5 z levels below the surface. The plumbing works and looks great! but that also got me thinking about how i can create an even better fortified base if I were to seal off the entrance to the main base and build a ladder in a tunnel going upward and make it surrounded by water. (only building bridges to harvest resources)

I dug a very large, 6 z level deep, 20x20 square. (it should hold more than the whole lake) and proceeded to attempt to empty the lake into my giant cube.

the lake was infinite! it filled my entire cube and didn't lose one drop of water.

I was just wondering if you're going to change the way water wokrs so that the game recognizes small bodies of water as opposed to oceanic sized ones?

thank you :praisesun:

Hey there!

Was your lake touching the edge of the map? The game currently assumes water is infinite if it is. Otherwise, the water has a volume to it. Though, it's not accurate to real world water. It has a bit of a rounding up calculation which means it can magically create more water. This is kind of like Minecraft's water system. I will be adding some props down the road to help players drain bodies of water as well as manage the water. i.e., sluice gates and pipes. But I'll keep the infinite edge map water the way it is.

The lake is by itself not touching the edge.

If the entire map was cut into four sections, the lake would be in the center of the top left section of map, not touching the bottom right; which is where the ocean is.

I think that I might have solved the problem. I did this during winter and I think that having the ice frozen across the top of the lake caused the infinite water. (I have a video of the water filling the hole and the lake not emptying)

thank you for the quick response and I like the ideas. :cozybethesda:
