How do shingles work?

So if I build them on the same level as the floor it seems I'm building them on the ground and if I build them a layer up it seems to only affect the top of the walls. How does this stuff work?

Hold ALT to place things in the air. That should let you put the roof or additional floors above.

I swear I built roofs holding ALT and it still just replaces the floor. I'll keep trying.

To make sure it doesn't replace the floor tile go up a floor above then do ALT! That kept happening to me at first too when I would replace my floor with the roof. :)

Does this work on mac? I just can't seem to make it work.

EDIT: Nevermind. My keyboard setup is weird and both my option keys are “right alt”. Try remapping if this happens to you.

The only real difference between floor and roof is the name. You can use either for a floor/roof. Also, holding ALT will let you place anything in the air, not just floors/roofs. :3
