JC1: How do you equip/use the grappling hook?

Maybe I'm just stupid (not out of the question) but I can't figure out how to even see the grappling hook in Just Cause 1.

I was just told that I've been given it, and the game explained about L-shift and L-ctrl, but...do I have to pick it up before I can use it? Where? Or do I have it already? It's not in my list of weapons. What key is supposed to fire it?

I see no help on the web which means it's probably something incredibly easy that I'm just overlooking.

I'm on the 11th story mission and i've had the hook for quite a while. The way i use it is spin the mouse wheel untill it says my weapon is the hook. Then i use right mouse button to aim and left mouse button to shoot it.

Aah, OK I get it. It was silently added to my inventory as #6 after all. I gues I was completely ignoring the weapon descriptions and just quickly scanning for a picture of some huge crossbow-hook contraption. It's a little tiny gun like all the rest! Got it.

Back in these days the grappling hook was a gun, not an arm-mounted contraption.

Yeah it's a gun that you get at the end of Mission 3.
