High Virtue mainly benefits fatigue restoration through Pray or Mortify Flesh. You will need 95+ virtue for it to be worth it though.
The largest in-game benefit is probably on the noble path when returning to England and trying to get a loan from the guild. High virtue can get the max money (essentially for free).
(If you have low virtue, you get penalized and lose rep with soldiers and the earl on th regular).
During the early runs, low virtue benefits more but if you got to a point where your profile level is high enough, I would usually go with high virtue.
I've been using random characters so far just because I wanted to see how far they can get, but maybe i'll start using custom made ones now just to finish the story.
