VR will get to be better than Half @$$ Alyx only by people funding, developing, buying and giving feedback on VR games. Trolls like RobotNinja who post things like "when u add multiplayer" and "when u add VR" only hold back the industry from the artistry it was supposed to help display.
This game's cancellation/"on holding" is unfortunate. There was potential for this game as a Firewatch-like adventure to be an enjoyable product that coincided with a VR game (that would almost certainly flop like Alyx). Lessons would be learned and not much would be lost if the game was designed with PC's and consoles as the main focus and VR remained an accessory.
Firewatch was one of those rare games that managed to transcend the medium solely on the strength of its storytelling and artistic vision. It's incredibly sad to see such a talented team relegated to cranking out soulless franchise fodder. Don't get me wrong, I loved Alyx as the technically excellent game it is, but it's no Firewatch... not by any stretch of the imagination.
Developers that can tickle your eyeballs seem to be fairly easy to come by, but developers that can manipulate your emotions are a seemingly rare breed... as are the games they craft. Please, Campo Santo, don't abandon your baby for shiny Valve baubles. If Valve is truly a "work on whatever you want" environment, please make "In the Valley of the Gods" a priority.
As for VR vs. traditional delivery, I really couldn't care less just as long the story delivers a punch and leaves me wanting more... something the Campo Santo team has proven they can deliver in spades.
Jeez, Campo Santo makes games
Valve buys them and they are done making game, just like every other team they bought.
They could hire any other good developers without destroying company of extincting species
