Game Has Officially Been Canceled

"Valve and Campo Santo confirm In the Valley of Gods is "on hold" as developers work on Half-Life: Alyx, Dota Underlords, and other projects."

Valve is not outright saying canceled, but this game has been in development for years now, and I can't think of a single instance of a game being put on hold only to actually come out at a later date. Valve won't even officially cancel Half-Life 3, so this game is dead.

This makes me reconsider the Epic Store.

Terribly disappointed to see such a promising project being swallowed up by -- apparently -- more appealing mainstream games.

In the Valley is not as good at generating revenue/hype as Half-Life. Valve swallowed the talents and made them self-allocate to more revenue-efficient projects. That is better time management. Thanks, Valve, for optimizing our life.

Yikes, this is a super bad take. Does it really matter when Valve is already making billions of dollars a year on just Steam alone? Why bother with virtual reality then when it only makes up less than 1% of the Steam userbase? Yet here they are creating a very costly VR headset, and making a sequel that is VR exclusive to game series that has been dead for a decade plus.

Bummer news. It was one of the few games I was really looking forward to and on the top of my wishlist.

Well, either we get that VR "killer app" everybody always said is needed, and with that extend the userbase. Or we complain about every potential killer app because it's VR-exclusive and should be released for flat displays. Can't really have both. I for one am happy they are doing it. Alyx might actually generate quite a lot of sales and strengthen the VR market. Which then attracts other devs and gives us more quality VR games in the long run. I'm all for it.

The flaw in that being those of us who don't have VR as an option, but hey, who cares about them, right?

Meaning what exactly? That there can be no VR exclusive games ever?

Because Valve doesn't care about developers; especially, independent studios. They give them small percentages, pull games, yet allow games like "Rape Day" to be released and only remove them after an outcry. Valve are enablers for all that's bad in the industry. I use to think they'd come around to their senses, but have since given up hope on them, so now I grab every free game I can on Epic that I already have on Steam, so, if they continue to disappoint us, I can make the transition to Epic without losing everything.

I did it few months ago, no regrets. I was able to play Control, Borderlads 3, The Outer Worlds and The Walking Dead: Final Season. And I got some nice games for free - Everything, ABZU, >observer_ and Inside.

The client and the Web store are very limited / bare-bone but I can live with it.
BTW you don't have to buy games directly from Epic, for example I bought Epic store key for The Outer Worlds with $10 off from Gamebillet.com (right now they sell it with 27% off, Borderlands 3 is 38% off, RDR2 is -22%).

What about Duke Nukem Forever and Rune II?

I don't think In the Valley of Gods is cancelled. It's like Unreal Tournament, postponed while the devs work on Epic's cash cow. I hope ITVOG does not become like Starcraft Ghost, postponed but every few years a dev will occasionally say there is hope and some other devs say they still want to work on it but nothing happens.

That's exactly what it already is. The team is broken up as only a few are taken into Valve's project and others are let go. So it's pretty clear ITVOG is never going to be released.
