The Insanity Ending and Yumi

So, this realization just hit me.

We're familiar with Yumi, the cute girl in pink who shows up at your apartment every now and then, yes? As I completed my first playthrough, I started wondering what her purpose was in the story. With most side characters, I didn't pay much attention to them in the big picture, but the game goes out of its way to introduce you to Yumi and have her show up multiple times, giving you food and checking to see if you're okay. But, after all that, she seemingly serves no real purpose in the story.

That was until I completed the insanity ending.

During Ayami's mental breakdown, there's a moment where someone in that mess tells Ayami to stop believing this delusion that she's a detective. Near the end of the breakdown, it shows Ayami in a straitjacket talking to a nurse who tells her she'll get her meds ready while Ayami babbles on about how she can't stop the investigation.

Hold on, who's that?[i.imgur.com] (excuse the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ crop)

That's definitely Yumi. The fact that Yumi brings you food and checks up on you in your "apartment" surely can't be a coincidence with this ending.

The achievement for completing this ending is aptly named "Nothing is real". Seeing as you've supposedly gone insane, this could be interpreted in different ways. Maybe what this ending tells us is that Tokyo Dark could all just be the fantasies of a lunatic in an asylum (which is what I'm inclined to believe). Or, maybe Ayami's interpretation of the world around her merely changed from bright to deranged when she fell into insanity, thus explaining why Yumi is the nurse suddenly, and everything that Ayami experienced during her meltdown is what "nothing is real" is referring to.

Anyways, I think Yumi is a pretty interesting character after all this. What do you think?

so, in order to get the insane ending, what you need is to get your sanity to -100, any other requirement?

I'm pretty sure you just have to get your sanity to -100 and reach the end of suicide forest.

Maybe Yumi is a member of the Esoteric Order of Dagon and first appeared as the friendly neighbour to keep an eye on the mask, and everything is actually real. Only the insanity ending is unreal, Yumi isn't a nurse.

If you catch my drift.

Cmon guys you can't be that pessimistic. There are a lot of strange unexplainable things going on in our world. The insanity ending is insanity ending that cannot be true ending anyhow.

I dunno still trying to get it
For the Revenge ending, more or less go for insanity ending and take enough pills before aokigahara to not drop below -100, and do some fun stuff with goto, and you should get it. You can check my guide for more general guidelines.

The last dialogue Ito had with Yumi felt weird. I don't remember the exact wording but Ito asked her how she entered and Yumi said something like: "I'm always here." but in a weird creepy way. I was expecting her to be revealed as part of the plot but it was the last interaction Ito had with her on this playthough. I also found it a bit weird that she always bring Ito food but we never see her eat it while we do see her eat some other time.

Yumi felt a bit like a "sanity check" to me and I expected her to be revealed as a delusion but I like the nurse theory.

To add to your thoughts, Apoc, Yumi's regular interactions with Ito follow fairly closely with the nurse theory. At no point are you able to avoid interacting with Yumi (which is probably how it would be if you were in a bouncy room and you were being checked on by a nurse), and she's always there to give you food when you talk.

And yeah, I think during the second interaction with Yumi, she appears suddenly because you left the door to your apartment unlocked, which is a little bit weird. IIRC she mentions how she didn't hear you making any noise and she was wondering where you were/what you were doing; this could maybe be an instance of the nurse asking how Ito's doing or what she was up to in her "delusions" to keep watch on her sanity and see if she's making any progress towards recovery.

Just some food for thought ^^

Its quite possible that Yumi is a psychiatric nurse (which is why you see her in uniform in the Mad ending), and not in the general hospital, which could be one reason why she takes an interest in Ito her boyfriend, especially after the incident.

I think it's more to do with the fact that as they live above each other, Yumi regards Ito asneighbours and likes to keep an eye out for them, even if its regarded as being nosey... I think she regards Ito as being a bit too serious and not having enough fun
