On the downtime maybe like 30 people, other times 100+.
In SWAT FPS-style games (like Sierra's SWAT 3 or Irraitonal's SWAT 4), there's real reason for players to work together in terms of breaching, flashbangs, recon etc. And timing and coordinating those types of actions has real meaning. DK:AS doesn't really have anything like that. You don't have any real need for another player to handle breaching while you do something else. And of course if you have a later shotgun you can just pretty well obliterate everything on a map.
For better or worse DK:AS is just a butt kicking side scroller so aside from sharing the occcasional medkit drop, I just never really found much benefit to co-op in this when I've played with other players. That's probably at least part of the reason nobody is playing it online most of the time. You can beg on Discord, which is what most people suggest when any co-op game has few players actively playing it.
I think it's more about grabbing some beer/whiskey and having fun with a friend and not "We have to be tactial here!", "We have to make a strategic plan"
The game reminds me more of those "Grab a friend and kick ass" games of old like Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Final Fight...you name it (also all games you can perfectly play alone but as with everything in life: It's more fun with a friend). I guess just having fun with a friend playing a game isn't in style anymore, everybody has to do a "role" and fulfill a "need" or otherwise it's "worthless"?
