How does the water pump work ?

Ok so i build the water pump and a stocking barrel, how does it work, there is no water and i waited a couple of days, still no water. So i tried to push the purify button, even though their was no water in it and sleep on it. And well no water still. But i dont no how to say it in english, but the water pump was in slight decay or worn or whatever you call it. I need water for a lot of stuff, so please help

I think it may be that your water pump or generator needs to be repaired. Please repair it at the workbench.

Thank you for the answer, but i figured it out. I just need to be patient and start the water pump even though their was no water

So i just need to hit the purify button than wait? It started to lose durability but no water. Durability is 90%
