Get the disc version (i wont tell you how, but you get the idea) and copy the mission files from that one to the steam one (if memory doesnt fail, its mission 11, parts a,b and c or something like that).
I was kinda hoping there was a mediafire thing that has just those files. Not a torrent of the whole game, just enough to undo the damage.
This confuses the Hell outta me. The uncut version of GTA: Vice City is okay on here, but not Hitman 2?
Edit: They have the CD for dirt cheap on Amazon and eBay, how do I tell if I'm getting ver. 1.0?
Last edit: Did a little more research and apperently GOG.com sells the 1.01 version, so there's that option too. It's cheaper to get the CD though, so I ask again, can I just buy whatever option and get 1.00 regardless?
That's a different scenario to GTA were the changes were made under protest in order to obtain permission to launch the game in certain countries (e.g. Australia).
Right. They edited out content that refered to cults and the word "♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥" (both A) done very messily and B) wasn't even that bad to begin with) because a small percentage of the fans took offence. That's censorship.
I think the thing that irritates me the most about this is the fact that no choice is offered when it comes to these edits when there really should be. People got offended? Fine, have a prompt during installation that asks you which version you want and don't assume all the fans are cool with having chucks of the story sloppily taken out.
I am 90% sure that the 1.01 version isnt cut in any way.
Btw, i am not sure if its ilegal to just download a 1.00 somewhere if you already own it.
But if you dont mind paying for it again...
There are many kinds of censorships, Eidos caved in to pressure from Sikh protests, thats social censorship, much like GTA Vice City due to Haitian protests:
Please Sign Hitman 2 Video Petition:
http://fateh.sikhnet.com/s/Hitman2Pet
Hitman-2 being changed due to Sikh protest:
http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=925444
Many of links are now dead, such as the one of the actual sign up pedition video. But as you can see this was not a decision by the developers, it came from Eidos, their publishers.
Thus, it is a censored version. Censored by the publisher (publishers, producers, editors and etc are the most common censors in media today).
I know that 1.01 isn't cut. I've contacted GOG to see if that's the version they sell but some of the forum posts post to the anwser being yes. (Edit: they responded and yes, it's 1.01.) If so, I'm going to pick their copy up next time the game is on sale as they usualy have major discounts up to 90% off. I believe I can with like 2 bucks to get a clean way of restoring the content.
Smith is supposed to be a comic relief to an extent, people shouldnt take him seriously (like 47), yet his "♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥" line was one of the main flags of the protest.
Oh man, I just remembered something. The Postal series is on Steam, usually cheaper than piss-soiled dirt too. Picked up the whole series just to see what all the hullabaloo was about for $20. Man, the stuff the second one does. Cow heads as weapons, Osama-esque terrorists every which way, the fact that you can mod ♥♥♥ hunters or whatever it's called back in the game just by subbing it in the workshop... that's probably not even scratching the surface. Why is Postal okay to sell on here completely uncut but not Hitman?
So insults are okay as long as the insulted does not hear them? Interesting way of seeing it.
It is a different level of seriousness. Also I think Hitman would have gotten away with smaller changes, had they edited their content smarter. But maybe they calculated that no matter how much they ♥♥♥♥ up, the rage of the gamers would always get directed at the minority feeling insulted and never fall back on them, because... well... gamers.
It's still out there and legally obtainable via GOG but you know what? I do take back my suggestion because of how utterly useless the edits were in the first place.
Patch 1.02 is a half-ass job in every regard and it fixes nothing whatsoever. Seriously, step back and just take a good hard look at everything. You're still infiltrating a sacred Indian cult and murdering members of it, Indian people still commit horrible crimes and Smith still speaks of them like they're a pack of blood thirsty monsters. Hell, in the edited version he's so disgusted with them he can even think up a name to call them! I honestly have no clue whatsoever how such a shoddy edit job suddenly made everything cool with the offended.
The developers gave so little of a crap here that they might as well of not even bothered in the first place.
Oh, so because the insult is portrayed in such a wacky manner that makes it okay?
Yes. Context matters. There is no ulimate measure for political correctness as it depends on many factors. There is a reason why Southpark gets away with things a sitcom in the afternoon would get crucified for. Hitman is rather earnest aside from some dark jokes. You cannot expect something in that context to be understood as a mere joke.
I'm tired of this arguement too. They did a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ job of dealing with complaints that makes parts of the game look like ♥♥♥♥ and does nothing to fix the problem and General Plastro and GOG.com have provided me with means to undo it and next time Hitman 2 is on sale, that's what I'm gonna do. I'm unsubbing this and I'm out.
Yet if a religious group (like back in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s) came back and picketed certain aspects of violence in games, resulting in their editing by the devs, people would go ballistic.
It doesn't matter if someone finds it offensive. Saying "♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥" in the game is a sign of when the game came out. Wearing child gloves and removing everything negative from the past isn't going to help anybody.
