Here's an imgur link to Boatmurdered, mapped by hand with Grid Cartographer.
This was the first thing I made with the program.
I recommend not making maps of that size but it's a good way to show what is possible.
And no, a map of that size didn't cause lag problems for me.
As for dungeon mapping, you can have the floor above or below overlay on your current floor so you can fit it all together.
I have been pretty happy with it, but if you aren't sure about it, wait for a sale.
That's why I'd look for a demo trial - so I can try making a map and see how intuitive it is... :-)
Right now, rather than using paper, I just use excel and color squares in as I go to make the map (one color for floor, second for wall, and indicators to mark things like where I need to explore or something is found).
Not sure I need the power of the pro version (I use other apps for creating maps for VTT gaming).
Probably will check out the gamer version and look to upgrade if I see the need for the full tools...
