Linux Version updates
Hey there! Thank you for the awesome piece of software -- I'm getting quite a bit of use out of it!

I wanted to ask, are there any plans to update the Linux version to parity with the Windows version?
Earlier today I tried to open a file only to be told that it's from a newer version and can't be opened... and then noticed the version installed by Steam on my Linux machine was 4.3.9.
It looks like the Linux/Mac versions on the website confirm that the latest version for those platforms are 4.3.9.

Are there any plans to bring the Linux version up to parity with the Windows version?
I was hoping to do some map making on the little computer while I was away from the beefier Windows systems.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much for your time!

Hi Chronosv2, there are no plans to ever return to the Linux and macOS versions. I've kept those around for the benefit of old customers, but they're definitely not recommended. I've been told you should be able to run the Windows version on Linux/macOS via Proton, but I have no experience of that and can't provide instructions or support there.

Thank you very much for your reply!
I can understand the problem with supporting multiple platforms. I'll see if I can get it running via Proton.

I hope you have a fantastic day!

Thanks. It wasn't a decision I took lightly but both Linux and mac presented significant challenges and unfortunately the sales simply weren't there to justify supporting it. Oh and Apple declared OpenGL and my mac obsolete, so that didn't help.

I used to be a user of Apple hardware myself, actually. But as an aspiring game developer finding out that they were going to make getting anything non-AppStore to work hellish made me rethink my position.
In regard to Linux, there have been more recent technologies that make it easier to work with (AppImage, for example), but the question of "Is this actually worth my time?" and "How much of a headache is this going to be?" are two really important questions that have to be answered, and I completely understand your decision that it really just isn't worth it.

I'm pretty thrilled with Grid Cartographer, honestly. I've been using it on my Windows box, and as I've been learning Godot I tried importing the mesh into it and created a little map I could walk around in pretty quickly!

Thank you very much for your hard work!

That's a shame, as I bought it specifically because it ran on Linux, many moons ago. And I really really hate booting into Windows. Though I can understand dropping Mac support, I'm fairly certain Apple hates their developers who dare try to make anything cross-platform...

So, about that, it actually runs fine in Proton! Earlier this year I got my hands on a Steam Deck and found a need for the software. Loaded it through Proton 8.0-5 and the mapping portion works just fine. Can't attest to whether Game Link will work or not though.

Yeah, I just always prefer software be native, it'd make it easier to get other stuff to work with it.

Maybe it runs on the Deck, but unfortunately I can't get it to work at all with Proton on Manjaro Linux.

EDIT: Actually got it working, problem was I installed it in a NTFS partition because I share files between Linux and Windows in my Dual Boot setup, and apparently proton dislikes that. This fixed it for me https://steamcommunity.com/app/684690/discussions/0/3418808914578068989/#c4625853246786785711

Yeah, that almost always causes an issue.
