The downside of doing ^this is that whenever a Specialist enters a vehicle, ALL resources the Specialist may have been carrying transfers to the vehicle. Which means that your Specialists won't be bringing their acquired resources back into the Colony.
And keep in mind that the ability to build the Garage is pretty far along on the tech tree. Taking the most direct path on the tech tree will cost you a _minimum_ of 2475 Science. That would be if you didn't research _anything_ else.
