Research Explained Here
I have seen several threads about people confused on the research. If you hover over the science icon on the top right you will note that it states, "Research points can only be obtained on the world map". This can be done two different ways, by building a settler and establishing a science outpost in another region, occupying a region with a science building present, or 2) by using a specialist to "harvest" the research points off a science node in the world map like any other resource. I hope this helps, if there are any questions at all feel free to ask.

I have a question about the research skill of specialists. Exactly what does this go toward? Is it the speed at which they conduct research "scavenging" at different locations outside your settlement, or is it how fast you unlock technologies within your settlement?

As far as i can tell it's just the speed at which they conduct research scavanging on the world map. So for instance sending a scientist with a 350% research level will not only be much faster than someone with 100 etc but it really helps if the research spot to be scavenged has three lots of radioactivity, as the scientist will spend less time scavanging and losing health. By contrast, one of the fighters for instance with a research skill percentage of 75 or 50 may well die trying to extract all research at a spot with high radioactivity.

Dallas hit the nail right on the head. A scientist will 'scavenge' science points faster from locations. A scavenger will 'scavenge' materials from locations faster & etc.

I was looking for some more info on research and just came across a very thorough explanation from one of the regulars on here Segovax.
