What the HELL is wrong with Specialist generation...?
I started out with a Scientist and a Scout, because despite having to make a blind decision (having no idea what specialists actually DO on my first playthrough) those sounded like safe bets. The first new specialist I had turn up at my gate was a Scavenger, but I couldn't scrape together the necessary 900 currency to recruit him, so I had to let him expire. I figured what the hey, another one will come along soon.

Since then I have been offered NOTHING but Scientists and Scouts. Scientist, Scout, Scientist Scout, Scientist, Scientist, Scientist, Scientist. Enough bloody Scientists already! I've already mined out every research node on the map, and even some of my Scouts are almost as good at researching as them anyway! I'm 40 days in and still have NO Fighters or Scavengers, and it's getting on my nerves. What the hell is with this?

That's weird for sure. Fighters seem to be less common than scientist but i got a fighter early in the game and haven't had a problem getting scavangers, unless the difficulty level has something to do with it? I'm playing on normal at the moment.

Heya! That sounds extremely odd, the specialist coming to your gate are randomized so there should always be different archetypes showing up. Have they been the same specialist or always a different one?

Pretty sure they're not the same specialist, especially since they alternate between Scientists and Scouts (I've started hiring them just to convert them to Settlers). Incidentally, the counter is up to over 50 days now with still only the one Scavenger I missed at the start and no Fighters.

Sounds like the specialists ARE randomised, but you forgot to include any compensatory mechanic that balances out the odds over time, and thanks to pure RNG I've just been THAT unlucky.
Honestly, don't take that this hard.

With the number of different classes and the number of days, you basically did about 7 recruitement rolls.

If there are:
leader/scientist/fighter/scout/scavenger this means 7 rolls (or 8) for a 1/5 chance.

The average would have been 5 rolls meaning 20 days and it's very easy to get to more of that. Honestly, it's not that unlucky, it's not that unlikely, and it's not that dramatic. It IS unlucky to have rolled that many scientists, though they are interesting early game anyway.

Also, all characters are some kind of biclassed, with some able to deal very nice damage, some able to recycle well, etc, so that's okay.

It's good that players have their own limitations, such as:

Okay, I let the Scavenger pass, now I can't exploit that "danger 3" tile, but then I can still exploit these danger 1, or 2, with my biclassed scavenger guys, and danger 0 or 1 with anyone. You did have "someone" instead of a Scavenger, as well, someone you CAN use.


It's post-apocalyptic and a survival management game so there are to be issues to handle and some unexpected to deal with. Just take more rest time between loots.

It's good that there arent' compensation mechanics or we would just have a rotation and a too balanced team all the time. This would add to reduce any unique curve.

This is why I bought the game. I was on the fence because I have so many games already, but I see an engaged developer and that swung me. Keep it up!

Ya personally i had hardly any use for fighters and scavenergers were handy, if you mined out all the nodes you should be making money from your settlement, selling things. You can also use the scouts and scientist to scavnge.

Fighters are only good for from what I gather due to their high HP and ability to handily defeat weak bandits. You can double up and send 2 scouts and they'll do the job.

There is nothing wrong with it. You can save & reload for other/better results. Even without reloading i got a good mixture of specialists. The really rare ones are leaders, found only one so far (day 50+), but plenty of scavengers and fighters.

i also found if you roll for a specialist and don't recruit said specialist they will rotate between 2 or 3 specialists until one of them gets recruited. This was a build or two ago when you could roll for a specialist reject that specialist and then reroll for another straight away mind you. Not sure if that ever got fixed. I know that you can't reroll right away anymore, but not sure if they fix the poll getting glitched or fixed to 2 or 3 specialists like that. plus you should be getting specialists when survivors come to your gate. you made no mention of them.

The first few were all Scientists and Scouts too. Then specialists stopped showing up with survivors at all.

You know, I thought I'd bring this up again, because I started playing another campaign recently, and it's obvious that they've STILL never fixed it! I started out with a Scavenger and a Scientist as my initial specialists, and since then I've gotten effectively NOTHING but more Scavengers with the occasional Scientist. Whether it's the ones that come free with the refugees or the ones that come up to offer their services for silver, I get NOTHING else. I did get ONE Scout come along early, who I had to pass on because I didn't have the silver to hire them, but aside from that I've gotten about 8 Scavengers, 3 Scientists, and that's IT.

Clearly the game's algorithm for determining specialists is just COMPLETELY borked and they never bothered fixing it.
