Commandos 3: Destination Berlin

Commandos 3: Destination Berlin

Can Not Open the Game
I just bought commandos 3 yesterday and I've come to try and play it today and it won't launch, it opens but then closes after the screen zooms in. I've run the game as administrator and changed the compatibility settings to windows 95,98,XP,7,8...etc and it is still not working. I'm on my windows 10 Microsoft surface pro 7. Thanks for your help in advance

I just posted this in another thread. Maybe you'll see it here:

As far as I can see, it depends on having "DirectPlay" installed (an old Windows thingy, that was abandoned much like "Games for Windows Live".

Might work for you?

So, here's the thing:

My GOG version runs.

My Steam version does not.

The ONLY DIFFERENCE between these two versions, seems to be that the GOG version has a cmd snipplet, silently installing/enabling DirectPlay. This also works on 'locked down' Win8.1 installations, which have no longer access to the "Install Windows App features" updates.

You can copy-paste this code into a text file and rename it into something.cmd or .bat and run it as admin.

@echo off IF NOT DEFINED PROCESSOR_ARCHITEW6432 ( %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\DISM.EXE /Online /enable-feature /FeatureName:"DirectPlay" /all /NoRestart ) ELSE ( %SYSTEMROOT%\sysNative\DISM.EXE /Online /enable-feature /FeatureName:"DirectPlay" /all /NoRestart )

The GOG Commandos3.exe is NOT using ANY "Compatibility Mode" adjustments.

The current/latest patch version is 1.42 hotfix2

I tested this on Win8.1 and my Win10. Both 64-bit editions.

If enabling DirectPlay for the Steam version does not do the trick, there is always the possibility to link your Steam account with GOG Galaxy (you get the GOG version for free), or buy it OR run it on Linux via WINE/Proton. The devs recommended even installing a Virtual Machine with Win7 or older.
My game got stuck on black screen.
Checked in the properties of the exe Disable screen optimization and the game works now (was GOG version but suppose it will work on the steam version too...)
Windows 10 Laptop with Nvidia 1060.

DISABLE FULL SCREEN OPTIMIZATION
Please go to the game installation folder:
- If the game was installed via GOG GALAXY, please select the game in GOG GALAXY, click on More -> Manage Installation -> Show Folder
- If the game was installed via offline installer, then you will have to manually navigate to the game installation folder, by default it's: C:\GOG Games\game-title\

Once in there find game's executable, right-click on it, and select Properties. In Properties window switch to Compatibility tab, and here enable "Disable full screen optimization". Press Ok to apply settings, and try to run the game again.
