Stuck at Underwater Tree HELP

I need to get the last light for the underwater level, but I'm stuck at the red tree. I know I need to use the red fish to jump out of the water and up into the water above the tree, the problem is I can't jump quite high enough. I've tried dozens of times, and I've gotten really close but many times I'm just a tiny bit short of actually making it into the water.

Is this just a timing issue for me? I'm not exaggerating when I say I've done it dozens of times. I watched videos to see if I was missing some trick, but all the ones I've seen, the players seem to get it in one or two tries, just jumping up from the water and jumping again. I'm playing on a Switch, so I don't know if that makes a difference.

It's really frustrating and killing my enjoyment of the game. Anyone else have trouble here?

Try not to mash the jump button. Jump once while in the water to boost yourself out of the water, then wait a bit and don't jump again until you've reached max height.

Thank you! I couldn't play for a few days, when I tried again I didn't mash the buttons and I got it in a couple tries :)
