Pirates start out of bounds in combat
My first combat started with the pirates far enough away that attempting to approach triggered an error noting I was out of bounds, and it would take a day to get back. It was less than a minute of travel time, they were still several km away when it produced the error.

The second time I approached somewhat slowly, but it still did it.

Deciding they were not really there yet, I skipped it next time, which caused an injury and fine.

It seems pretty buggy to let the AI outside the mission area to the point that it causes an error to get near them. If they can go there, and it is specifically asking me to intercept them, I expect to be able to approach.

It either placed them right at the edge, or the map is very, very, small. If it is simply very small, you may want to consider enlarging it substantially (or if that is not possible for technical reasons, bounding it by gently slowing you to a stop rather than throwing a hard error and skipping a day).

It look like a bug, I will investigate.

Thanks for the report !
It also crashed to desktop about a minute after this. I was configuring trade routes at the time, but this is the first time I have seen it come down, and that was the very next thing I did.

I did have trade ships on those routes harmed in the attacks, and lost some stations.

The pirates then decided they wanted peace, and everything seems to be working normally again.

This happens a lot to me as well, the enemy ships seem to have nothing stopping them from just wandering way out into nowhere. Especially seems to be the case for crippled ones (in fact I half suspect they go out there and then repair).
Do you known when this situation happen ?
- you end a travel in a sector with ennemies ?
- an ennemies end a travel in your sector ?
- a company with ships in your sector declare war ?
- you declare war to a company with ships in your sector ?

The ships are too far at the beginning of the battle ?
Only uncontrollable ship are out of range, or alors functional ships ?

AI Ship should try to stay near the center of the sector, but if there are heavily damaged or uncontrollable, there is no way they can stop and they will drift into space. However, no healthy ship should be outside sector bounds.

Thanks
Normally when the ships are healthy, what happened is that I go to war and fly to a sector which has enemy ships in it (mostly just one or two small ships this happens to) and find that it's just cruising around about 8km past where the game sends me back for going too far. Fortunately this often seems to send them back as well, at which point they behave normally again.

I think they probably get out there by being crippled and then repair out there. I'm not sure why they don't come back. The healthy ones don't seem to return to the middle to fight me, either, so maybe after they go too far the AI has some kind of pathfinding issue.
