Even when the points register, you lose all gained points after manually respawning. If you die, the points are saved, but manually respawning takes them away from you. If you pass a checkpoint, it ends up being saved properly, but otherwise you can't manually respawn like that and keep your points.
How strange....we get more points for not crashing. What kind of messed up logic is this? Sarcasm aside, if you want to get the maximum points from a track, always respawn at the start (default back button for xbox controllers) when you crash instead of the last checkpoint you made it through. Only use checkpoints if your goal is simply to survive rather than get rep.
As for farming rep, desert and city are the big money. I try to do every course on them whenever I'm hunting for the top tier drops. Your first goal is to survive. There's no point in going big if you never make it to the 125k+ rep mark to even get a chance at getting the good stuff. Always take extra steepness and anything which reduces curves. More steepness = more points and less curves = less deaths and more points. Otherwise, just keep playing through and you'll get an experienced eye for when to bunny hop for more air or when to hit the breaks to not die.
If you do a couple stunts, get like 5k Rep, the points register (as in they go into your bank) and you then crash. Those 5k Rep points are saved.
If you do the same thing, but respawn after the points are saved, you lose those points.
In other words, crashing save's your points, while choosing to respawn doesn't.
Tiny Pixels was saying that you could get your points, wait for them to save, and then respawn (keeping those earned points), as a method of grinding rep. But that doesn't work, as you need to crash to save those points. Which is definitely quite strange.
