When you open the Multiplayer menu, you'll see a list of lobbies. Look for your buddy's username in that list. If you don't see it, go back to the main menu and back into the Multiplayer menu. Sometimes they don't show up right away.

Note: there's a bug with MP where sometimes people other than the host will get stuck at an infinite load screen. The only solution is to leave the MP game and restart it.
