Controller Issues? READ THIS

Hey all! We've had a small number of people saying that they've been having issues playing the game with a controller. It's a tricky issue to fix on our side, because it's only a very small number of people actually having this issue -- the vast majority of players are using a controller, and are seeing no issues. Indeed, on our side we've tried playing the game with a variety of controllers, including Xbox and PlayStation controllers, and have been unable to replicate the issues.

With this in mind, it's most likely that if you're having issues, something is happening between Descenders and certain plugins installed on your PC, having a little fight over who gets to do what. To try to fix this, we'd suggest trying the following:

1. Run the game in Big Picture Mode. In the options for Big Picture Mode, you can select Controller Settings, and can specifically tell Steam what sort of controller you have, and even manually tell it what you want your controller to do. We believe doing this will sort out the vast majority of issues people are having.

2. If this doesn't work, we'd suggest finding out which weird plugins are running on your PC, and especially think about anything weird you have physically attached to your PC, as these can also cause conflicts between your controller and the game

3. If it's still not working, we'd suggest grabbing a different controller and seeing if that works -- it may well be that it's just that specific controller that is being funky with the game.

If none of the above works, we're happy to hear about your issue below -- please just make sure you tell us the following:

a. Send us your output log -- you can find it in C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\LocalLow\RageSquid\Descenders\output_log.txt -- send it to [e-mail]
b. What kind of controller you have
c. Whether it's an official or unofficial controller
d. What happens when you fiddle with Big Picture settings -- does it do nothing at all?

Big picture doesn't help. I'm using a Nacon GC100XF I've used without a single problem in games like Automobilista, Wreckfest and all kinds of emulators (from NES to PS2).

The controller inputs when in Descenders turn on/off all the time, even digital inputs (buttons) are not consistent at all. It's literally impossible to turn consistently, it's impossible to do any "accelerate all the time" challenge...

I may add that people having issues with Unity should try and tell if they have problem with other games, other games made with Unity and other games using the same input plugins (see

im using the same cntroller like you, and i also never had a problem with it in any other game....

im using the same cntroller like you, and i also never had a problem with it in any other game....

Please help, I have the exact same problem with the "NACON Revolution Pro Controller 2"

Just posting this to make it more complicated: I have the same issue with a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller on macOS. Controller is recognized in Steam itself and on the »press any key« screen. After that absolutely no input possible. My 8bitdo SF 30 Gamepad and a PS3 controller work just fine on the same machine.

On MacOS, the steam controller would work for press any key, but absolutely no response after that. I had just been using my SNES controller with a key binder instead, and that had been working fine enough, but there must have been something in a recent update that made the game recognize the SNES controller as a controller, so it now has the buttons bound as if it's an xbox controller, which is an unusable layout with an SNES controller. So now I can't even use that work around. Big Picture has no effect either way.

So, what this is saying is that the game is broken and youre done looking into trying to fix it as it doesnt effect you.
great... i guess this will be the first game i return on steam.

also, ♥♥♥♥ your "output log" the game doesnt see anything wrong so there should be any log.
none of your suggestions work using a steam controller.

I've got a problem with Monster Pusat Pro Gaming Wireless Gamepad. I've no problem any other game. I loved the game but i cant play properly.

I left a window open while playing and my controller issues stopped, it may be an inconvenience to most people but it may be useful until the bug is fixed.

I'm having the same issue - controller only works if game windows isn't focused. Also of note, it used to work just fine and went haywire seemingly out of the blue.

Thank you for this. I hadn't had any controller issues and then suddenly a few days ago my controller stopped working after the first track. This fixed it.

i have a nacon revolution 2 pro controller, never had any issue. and i really like the game's concept but i am not able to play it. keyboard controls suck lol
going to try the listed options, i'll post an update

i got into big picture, activated ps4, xbox and generic controller, switched my controller from PC mode to PS4 mode, had to do something with my sound devices and it worked!

SOOOOO HAPPY:) got already some gameplay, it feels great now! not a single issue.

i fixed it i have a programm called vjoy that i used for playing with my rc contoller.
just deinstall it then the game works
