Out of the loop. What happened?
Not sure how heated this conversation is, and I really just am curious, but I hear constant talks in the FGC about how this is currently the worst mainstream fighter maybe only 2nd to MK1.

This is not MY opinion, I have loved this game in the past but I guess the rollback netcode really killed it? Which then begs the question I thought rollback netcode was supposed to be the golden standard for fighting games so was it just implemented poorly or was it overhyped?

If I'm off the mark please correct me I'm just curious why the game is getting so much hate recently. Also of course RIP Toriyama.

It's mostly just down to publisher mistreatment. Last few patches have slashed a lot of this game's integrity as a competitive fighter, on top of radio silence from developers and promises barely kept. The rollback release is nowhere near polished enough to justify the year and a half wait from announcement, and the game needed it in 2020, not 2024. It's not SFV rollback bad, but it's really not too far off.

It's not just hate and negativity for the sake of it, it's mass community disappointment in what the game has become. Even excluding the rollback patch, every update following the release of SSJ4 Gogeta has obliterated almost every underlying rule of the game. I can't describe it in any other way than "weird and stupid", very much just feels like throwing balance ideas at the wall and seeing what sticks. It isn't the game that people fell in love with or that ArcSys put so much soul into.

It couldn't even make EVO because nobody cares, the releases of Tekken 8 and SF6 were the final nails in the coffin because why would we bother coming back when other avenues are so much more promising? Not to mention the rollback update broke the Spectator Mode. In a game infamous for having the highest viewership numbers at majors. Nobody inside wants to play it, and anybody interested on the outside can't even watch it for the visual spectacle this game is famous for.

TLDR; Bandai neglected the game the second it stopped being a cash cow and ArcSys have been earnestly trying, but failing, to keep a sinking ship afloat. DBFZ is a husk of its former self and people have given up.

<shrug> I have plenty fun playing with my friends and ranked, don't care about fandom dramas.

Thanks for the thorough response. That's really unfortunate to hear, but makes sense. Yeah I was shocked to hear people saying it is the worst or 2nd worst modern fighting game when I knew the original reception was very positive.

Well, thanks again, hope it either gets fixed or something happens.

Rollback is great. Idk what these mfers are smoking.

The problem, and the lack of polish boils down to some cosmetic bugs. It's particularly bad in spectator mode when watching live games in ring matches (not replays), but extremely minor in actual game and don't affect gameplay at all.

So apart from cosmetic bugs that got better in some places but somehow got worse in others, connection wise rollback has been great. It's not magic so it's not gunna save you from wifi warriors but still.
