Sub vs Dub War: The Pointless War
I have to make this discussion because I'm tired of going to any anime I watch and seeing the comments all saying either Dub is Superior or Sub is Superior. It doesn't matter what language it is in, it all comes down to opinion. Like seriously? What's the point of war? It's like shipping wars in any fandom. ALL POINTLESS! I prefer it in my own language, aka, English. I just hate how weebs (No offense, I highly doubt all of us here are weebs... I hope so), all start going batsh*t insane on me to the point I'd get death threats for saying I like the dub more then the sub. But seriously, what even is the point of this war? I'll only ever participate in it if they make a Star Wars anime and they call the Japanese VA for Luke miles superior then Mark Hamill himself. (Probably the whole Star Wars fandom would too). Anyways, this war is completely stupid. Let people be entitled to their opinion and not try to force your opinion on others like if it was brainwashing.

I'm used to it. First time I watched Dragon Ball in Japanese VO with Russian subs. That voice matches his personalty, IMHO, and makes him special.
Dragon ball is sounds fine though, hes a child so it makes sense to sound like a child. But hes now an adult and adults voices deepen.

It's actually a smart decision, giving Goku a childish voice, which manages to sound serious when fighting, fitting his behavior. When you watch is japanese the enlish sounds so off. It removes a whole part of the character. Also every character in english sounds like they have lung cancer or smoke too much, their voices are all grave, forced.

Now you guys go all check canadian dubs on youtube. It's a masterpiece trust me.

Yes, the enlish does sound off.

One or two example, on both ♥♥♥ and french, Yamcha has the voice of the guy who voices freaking Hamuro Ray, Tuxedo mask men, and Seyiah, who makes awesome songs and give a cool yet funny vibe.... And in English you have a voice actor who gives him on purpose a dumb surfer dudebro voice because "he doesn't like his character lol".

On ♥♥♥ and French, you can feel the pride and arrogance of Vegeta, a prince like figure, while in English you get a chain-smoker voice with a redneck vibe (at least to me)

Plus the script changed on purpose...

The choice is easy to me....
Do you speak Japanese and French even??? What is the point of watching a show you like in a language you don't understand??? You just come off as a major weaboo.

Oldboy is a South Korean film, and yet it's one of the greatest movies I have ever seen. It has a dub that no sane person would watch. Liking something in a different language doesn't make you a "weaboo." It's easier to ignore flaws when you don't fully grasp the language. If a foreigner who had no natural grasp of the English language watched the Oldboy dub, they'd be able to ignore it's flaws, the same with someone watching a subbed anime. I prefer dubbed anime, but a lot of dubs don't sound as good as the subbed version. Doesn't make me a weeb, it's just my preference.

Most people are not only able to read subtitles, crazy stuff I know, but are able to discern emotion from tone/inflection.

in the case of Dragon Ball, the original dubs of DB and DBZ 'americanized' and dulled the show, DBZ especially, by changing a lot of things.

Personally, I find the japanese voices fit a lot of the characters better too.

Am I the only one that liked the rock music in the movies? Especially in Broly's. I think it was either Pantera or System of a Down.

I am a french pursuing a languages translation degree, dummy.... I also understand perfectly the english language, and I can tell by comparison that the French dub is much more faithful to the original dub than the english version, especially regarding the character personalities .

The question is not to fanboyism about the original dub, the issue is that the dub purposely modify ("americanized" as jackjackjackNcoke rightfully said) the script and the characters as they suit. Which is really annoying when it comes to fandom discussion.

I will take the Picollo/Yamcha scene I cited as an example... the whole scene in the original dub is a nice and great reference to the famous quote from the Cell arc about Dende. The dub literally butchered that scene because Sabat desired compulsively to do a "Yamcha sucks lol" meme for the billionth time just to pls the dbza fanboys.

You don't even need to understand Japanese, Picolo doesn't say a single time "Buruma" or "Vegeta", but says "Dende" and "Kami". And Yamcha doesn't even react to that non-existant "roast"

I personally hate that because that makes Picollo, one of the wisest and no-nonsense character of the franchise look like an petty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, for no real reasons.

"Cited" XD
It's "quoted"
From another french studying english

But you summed up the situation pretty well, it's weird that french all prefer the japanese voices (at least I don't think I ever heard someone say "french dub is better"), while english natives really stick to the dub in their native language. And it's not like the english version is better than the french. Most of them do so prabably to "shine in society" by not appearing as a weaboo while they don't even know what a weaboo is. And heck what if people are weaboo? What will it change?
