I suck so bad at this game. Help?
Trying to play online I just get combo'd until i am dead, ill be luck to get in one or two hits, so I don't even try there.

Playing against the easier AI like in the normal arcade levels, I absolutely destroy them because they barely do anything, Playing against that is boring and it is impossible to improve with that kind of opponent,

Playing against the harder AI, is an absolute nightmare. They are impossibly hard and frustrating to play against. They just instantly counter anything that i do.

I feel like there is nothing that I can do to get better at this game.

you can set the AI to lvl60 and upwards and test. But the best way it to do the Character challenges and learn how to do some combos and improve in your defensive play like blocking and dodging. It took me about 210h to just get relatively ok at the game.

yea the story mode is just there to be there. Getting better at the game really needs alot of training and understanding of most characters to know what and when to avoid their moves

Thing is the AI is weak to something called staggering. This is when you delay the normals in your blockstrings so that the opponent has enough time to do a move but because a jab is at most 6 frames fast, they will get hit before their move can complete. When you stagger the AI it's like they co stantly coinflip whether or not to attack when they have space.

And OP, feel free to ask us anything specific, we all had to start somewhere

I'm by no means good at the game, but some of the major hurdles I first had to get over when venturing online were:

The need to be patient. You really have to accept that when someone hits you and you block, that doesn't make it your turn to hit back. You have to wait for an opening and if you miss it, you need to wait some more.

Don't fly, dash. In the singleplayer you can fly into your opponent with reckless abandon but online you'll just get punished for it. Dashing is quicker, safer and you can do it mid-air.

Don't spend use your ultimate attacks unless you intend to kill with them. If the opponent has enough health to comfortably survive, you're just wasting that precious meter.

I'd also recommend watching some videos of better players that commentate. Even if you struggle to follow you can pick up little tips here and there. I personally like DotoDoya on the YouTubes:

https://www.youtube.com/c/DotoDoya

And lastly, practice and accept that fighting games take hundreds of hours to master. Accept the Ls and try to work on improving your game than beating other people.

Hope this all helps! :Krillin::fourstarball:

Have a good attitude. Learn things one by one. This game is easy, but you still can't go do everything all at once. Like a safe blockstring. 5M into assist confirm. Assists to help with pressure. Tick throws and dragonrush combos. Look around the training settings after the training has begun. Repetition is the mother of learning. Watch basic guides and what better players do sometimes, like youtubers or matches straight from championships.

This is overall great advice for newcomers, which usually make these three mistakes.

Don't superdash and don't vanish just because you can, both are easily punishable.
Learn to react to these with 2H (down heavy).
Learn to move with IAD (instant air dash).

Learn to block, a lot of new FG players don't seem to realize how important it is. You should ask yourself, what can I do in "this" situation? Can I reflect? Can I attack with X? Can I vanish? In FGs you must understand what your opponent is doing and keep blocking until you recognize a gap in their pressure. At the beginning it will probably seem like you can't do anything, but knowing when to counter something will come from experience, trial and error. Especially if you're in the corner, be wary that most of the time you won't be able to simply mash attack buttons.

Actually it's alright to use supers even if you don't kill. Supers are used as combo finishers to rack up as much damage as you can, it's specially good to add them if you got an unscaled starter like 2M. But yes, don't use them every single time, be wary of your meter, and DONT DO RAW SUPERS (as in, simply throwing them out of nowhere), decent players will just block/reflect and punish you. There are exceptions in certain situations, but this is the general rule.

I'd also recommend learning at least 2-3 basic combos but without using autocombo, do the easiest ones, there's plenty of videos in youtube you can look up. Practice them until you can do them consistently and eventually you'll be able to confirm these combos in real matches.

Don't use you're assists randomly, they're not there just to hit your opponent, they can be used to control the space, get in to attack, keep up the pressure and can be incorporated into your combos too.

Remember to use sparking, dying without using it would be a huge waste. Sparking can be used as a defensive option when you're being pressured, it can be used for high damage combos, save you by restoring blue health and it also gives some special properties to your character. Like being able to cancel certain attacks or empty vanish (hold the vanish button and you character will teleport but it won't attack).

Take it slow, fighting games are hard to get into, there's a lot of info to process and whenever you play against a more advanced player it can be really frustrating, concentrate on watching what they do and what can you learn about it.

You really gotta spend time in training learning combos. You can get decent at reading and defense without going to training but really until you sink 20-30 hours into training testing your combos, testing counters to certain moves that have been beating you, and testing different defensive options you will probably get bodied more often than not online. Just try spending 1 hour practicing your combos and then go online and you will see just how much a difference that 1 hour made against people close to your skill level. Now imagine how much better you would be after 20 hours training.
