How/what are some good team compositions?

thats a very open ended question. Are you looking for what the good teams are or just what characters work well together?
The best characters work well on almost every team. Cell, Vegeta, A Gohan, 16, Kid buu. Black, and Trunks go well almost everywhere too but work so well as assists mostly.
Most point characters include: 21, 18 (sometimes), Nappa, teen gohan, Frieza (a lot of frieza's are anchor but hes really not great at it), Bardock, Broly, SSGSSJ goku, Adult gohan, cell, kid buu, etc
Assist characters include Black (hes good anywhere though), Goku SSJ, Black, Kid Buu, vegeta ssj, Trunks, Cell to an extent, 16,
Anchor/Characters that dont have a defining roll include Ginyu, Beerus, Tien (his assist is good too but his damage as an anchor is great), Majin Buu, Krillin, SSGSSJ Vegeta, and the characters that work well everywhere.
Some really common teams you'll see are a combo of cell/adult gohan point, Kid buu/black 2nd, and Vegeta is usually on almost every team. You can find solid teams very easily in this game with some experimentation though.

point = first character. Normally who you'd normally want backing your team with 2 assists.
Assist character = A character primarily picked for their assist. IE vegeta, a beam assist, 16 Assist, etc
Anchor = Last character. Namely the character you use if your first two are dead, most of the time. Usually a character who works well by themselves.
This rule of thumb is not that important in this game,but its a decent guideline for some players who wanna make a team. I personally prefer having 2 strong characters (Cell, kid buu), that can switch freely into each other while using their assists to back up their neutral, and goku ssj assist because its a strong assist + he does good damage as an anchor.

If you're new to the game, only worry about finding the characters you like. Worry about team composition later. It's not as important as in Marvel games anyway.

In low tiers it doesnt matter at all.
On higher levels the ssj vegeta assist is too good to ignore. A.gohan and c16 have some unique tools making them s-tier currently. Others like cell or goku black are very well rounded as well as kid buu, trunks or gotenks.
Then again ppl like brkrdave make it to finals with teen gohan, vegeta and fat buu. 2/3 widely considered low/mid tier.
