Yes, you can see the animated fish, or, if they are too far offshore you can see splashes and ripples. They just appear in random (ish) clumps usually swimming apart and then back together. I believe that you stand a better chance of catching if you drop a hook in the middle of their clump but you can also catch by just randomly fishing anywhere so who knows if there is any actual intelligence to it?. In the lake I mentioned they do tend to move from west to east and then back again, perhaps because it is quite narrow at that point.
