If there isn't a waypoint either the save or your game is corrupted.
The thing with William is, he's more handsome than any other guy in the game.
You shouldn't be able to miss him.
Another tip, he's most likely somewhere around the village in the bottom left corner of the map.
Lydia's comment about William's house being by the road and that I couldn't miss it, was confusing. I thought the house was close by, not half way accross the map.
Btw, handing in the quest says to bring Lydia the news. But if you talk to her she asks if you've finished the task. What you have to do is to appraoch the fertilizer machine. Then the quest ends.

Also, after completing many quests, all you have to do it get near the NPC's for them to say "thanks... here is something for you...". Often I have seen this message quite far from the NPC. So like you noticed from Lydia, after she thanks you for completing the quest, from then on she asks if you've finished the task. But once you go over to the fertilizer spreader, then you have 'fully' finished the quest.
