I am currently plowing then fertilizing, then cultivating (to work it into the soil - as if IRL).
Check out this forum, where other players have been tabulating the information they found from changing the inputs for commodities, to see how the outcomes are affected.
"Yields/Crop List/Prices"

The game mostly seems to track the percentage of procedure done (ie..plowing, fertilizer, etc..). I have only seen a note if I cultivate before plowing. But, even then I belive it still goes towards the total percentage cultivated. Those percentages are really what is 'important', since they are used in the 'formula' to calculate the final yield.
One future game 'mechanics' that I would really like to see added is to have a variable for crop growth. Such as if bad weather (too much rain/too little rain, wind damage etc...), or excessive pests &/or weeds in the fields. This variability would make the game have more realism. But, that said, I would probably like to have those variables on a slider option, so that players could select the level of "realism" they would like to play the game as.
