i like mods but let them finish their game before we have people messing with their files?
edit:
to me it seems counter productive to add mod functionality before they get the basics done.
Let them flesh out their product first.
now? NO!
when? with full release!
And it would'nt take the development cycle out of their control, as u can only mod on single & private servers anway, so will never negetively effect an offical server. infact it will help with that development, as best mods could be coded into the offical servers if devs chooses.
while it is possible to implement mods from day 1, it would add a lot of work and possible complications.
the entire project would become a convoluted mess of unknowns.
-let's wave our magic wand and add mod support-
oooh, we can have mods now, let's try a few.
installed a nice texture mod that replaces the standard textures.
a new weapon and custom drones.
This is nice, the game looks even newer now AND i can make my Sci-Fi peaceful army style Hippie base.
oh wait, what? patch day?
here come the threads that say this or that is not working, a few just outright screaming for the dev's to fix their mess.
do you start seeing the problem yet?
suddenly the developer needs to ask himself a whole new set of questions.
what mods are being used?
what is the quality of said mods?
when was the mod last updated?
is the reported problem one of our changes or did the user install conflicting mods?
etc.
suddenly some of standard changes in early access start breaking mods that might or might not be updated in the future.
variables, variables, variables.
you add in way too many possible problems that are out of your hands to control and that can be deadly to any project.
The amount of bugreports due to broken mods will be overwhelming , considering how accessible ue4 is any how active the modding communities are in moddable game. Just look at factorio. Its crazy. Its too early.
I would prefer to have mostly stable and balanced game before the modders get their playground
I see the senario your trying to paint, but I don't agree with you!
Why would the devs even respond to peeps crying to the game support about mods not working on private dedicate servers? When mod development, updating & support would be the mod creator responsibility to maintain, not the game devs.
I know devs change a lot of code that break a lot mods, but if the mods are maintained by their creator, then any disruptions to players on modded servers will be minimal & if the mods are fully broken, players/admins will just drop em & keep on moving.
The only thing that can cause real problems, is the way steam implements mod updates. But, if server admins stay on top of the updates, its not much of problem
And not all games crash & burn from mod problems, quite a few games have started with workshop open for players content & their doing quite fine & some have even blossomed. Look at Ark for instance, they even implemented few maps from the workshop community into official DLC's content too.
Hey, didn't know magic wand was a real thing for coders, any chance you could let us know were we can purchase it from please?
this alone is enough to give you an answer.
It would cause an inflow of useless feedback, sometimes these post are more rant than feedback.
they already have a lot of words to go through, adding mod support NOW would make that job a lot harder.
Mod support later? i'm all for it!
but right now it can only make it harder to get the original plan done.
I love mods but this is not the time.
Mod support doesnt work like this :
Yes , make mods ....tadaaa mod support done.
Its more like this :
Ok guys today on the list :mod support ....“rolling eyes and tears of suffering “ .... ok ... lets do it ... i mean we could spend the next 3 month working on the actual game instead of this mod api but ok we do it ...
“ nono ...you there ... you do it alone so we can continue producing content ! ...“ “yeeaaaahhhokthankyou6monthmodapicodingissomuchfun“
This is what supporting mods is like to begin with. Then you have to maintain it.
Not idea suggestion for the games in its current state of development!
I am all for mod support . The idea as such is a very good idea and suggesting it is more than welcome but as i said : now? NO! Later? +1!
And apologies if I gave the impression that it must be done right now, that was not my intentions
