I was a bit concerned when I first looked at Pantropy's mixed Steam reviews until I started reading the negative ones. "Hit tree, hit rock, got refund." I'm paraphrasing but not by that much.
This is definitely one of the better EA releases. Especially in recent memory. Atlas really is a dumpster fire from Wildcard/Grapeshot.
Most people that do play the game are waiting on that patch to hit the game. The game still checks every box for me personally and the community has been good. It does not have high numbers as of yet, but I do believe that they said they stopped all advertising until they get these patches out to get the game in a more stable state.
I can understand the devs, they don't want to market the game yet until some major issues get fixed. I will do the same if i am in their place.
The problem is once your product is out in the wild it starts to age. No matter if its an EA/development process or finished product. The clock is ticking against your product (previously called "shelf life"). So in most cases it would be absurd to "hide" your product instead of trying to actively selling it.
Just a quick look around the net (and YT) shows that the devs indeed try to actively sell their product. So your statement seems to be nonsense. Factual and economical.
However, their selling campaigns (if you want to call it that) seem to be strangely... ineffective..?!
I thought the whole thing to go on steam is to present your product to millions of potential buyers. Zothen is arguing with a crow bar but he has some valid points.
Kickstarter raised ~75k with a 2nd try. I don't know what the sales on steam are but they weren't going through the roof. Then yea you've seen the youtubers who're selling their mom for free copies going crazy about the game. Focus on US servers and mech fans.
So after all that, one can get the impression there's a desperate need for funding. The kickstarter says the team has a size of 12 but when looking at the numbers, thats not fulltime for sure.
Models and environment looks decent so i guess a good chunk went into that. Unfortunately no investment into writing like story, missions, etc. A good part of the kickstarter features are just not there and another part is just not working. And hell for the AI alone you need a ton of work. Not to mention the basic stuff like damn door animations or market. Or the design - since kickstarter presented just rough ideas. You need to fill them with life, test them, try iterations, etc.
So yea the chew metaphor might fit well.
But who knows, since we're all hot for a mech game ppl might still buy if basic things will be fixed. Its a long way for sure and currently i'd say minimum 3 years if not 5. Depending on $ and if they manage to grow. If not - well, read your EULA^^
