G29 - Can't get my gear shifting to work without a stick
I just got myself a Logitech G29 but decided not to spend the extra money on the gear shifter until I check out how sim racing feels like and whether I should invest some more in the future.

Everything works great right out of the box for MudRunner, but trying to figure out how to set up the gear shifting system is a huge PITA. It's driving me crazy! Please help!

I want to use my clutch in combination with the paddle shifters. I thought that I would be able use my paddle shifters temporary until I dump more money on the H gear stick later on, but the game isn't very intuitive in that regard. There's no sequential gear up/down mechanic. It forces me to bind a certain button for all 6 different gears, which wouldn't work without a stick.

Here are the solutions that I came up with/found on the internet:

1- Forget manual shifting and just use the automatic gear (this is a no go for me because it's not fun due to the nature of the game going crazy and changing gears 10 times a sec, and anyway I prefer hardcore mode which doesn't let you use diff lock on automatic).

2- I can bind my paddle shifters as follows: right shifter for 1st gear, left shifter for reverse or 2nd gear. You don't need more than 1st on hardcore anyway. This sounded very promising at first, but turned out this isn't going to work because you need to actually HOLD that gear button the whole time you're driving, otherwise it goes back to N if you let go.

3- I read somewhere that I can use my mouse as a realistic replacement and feel for the gear stick (which I agree with!), but I can't get that to work correctly either because the only way to begin shifting is by pressing "R" on the keyboard and then moving your mouse to the desired gear, or by simply clicking on the gear icon with your mouse and moving the stick. But unfortunately this isn't user-friendly at all. Im looking for a way to change gears fast and completely drive without relying on my keyboard.

The last solution seems like the way to go. I was thinking of fixing that by rebinding "R" to use my clutch instead, then move my mouse and treat it as an actual gear stick, but then the game doesn't allow you to bind anything from the keyboard section with a button from a different device such as the wheel/paddles, and vice versa. I thought about manipulating the key assignments on my Logitech G-Hub and bind my clutch to use "R", but looks like there's no way I can change the key assignments for my paddles anywhere in the software. Do I need to go back to LGS instead of G-Hub? Im too tired to try something different after what I just went through.

Any ideas?

As far as I know it is all or nothing, i.e. wheel+gears or other (keyboard etc.). Not sure though, correct me if I'm wrong. I use G25: wheel + gears + gas/brake/clutch. Works brilliantly.

Too bad. So my only option is shift gears using the keyboard & mouse and ditch my clutch all together? Let's hope someone has some kind of hack to get this working :(

Hopefully Snowrunner has a better support than MR in that regard.

I hate that the G25/G27 came with a good stick shifter along with extra buttons on it for many uses, wheres G29 costs more, has a basic shifter, and is sold separately!

I do not run SR because it has such a rudimentary gearbox handling. MR is better. But for you, it might actually be a better option. Hopefully somebody can add more info on how to make your setup work with MR. Have you tried Spintires Mod? Does it add extra functionality for you?

Yes, the G25/G27 is far better than the G29 in many respects. That's why I never bought a G29. I had my first G25 for 14 years before it broke. After that I got hold of 2 G25:s and 1 G27 (all used and cheap) and they serve my whole family now, lol.

If you don't mind, can you help me with the link of that "Spintires Mod"? Googling this doesn't come up with useful results since the game was previously called "Spintires: MudRunner", and well, the game has mods in it. I also looked through the workshop but found nothing relative.
There's an option in the control settings, on the right side of the screen to to set manual gearbox with clutch, right under Enable Force Feedback.

Thank you, but I don't think you read my post. I didn't buy the stick shifter. I tried every possible solution to shift my gears without relying on my keyboard/mouse, but it's just not working.

I came up with a solution to shift gears without having to rely on my keyboard. Unfortunately it's not ideal and you still can't use the clutch, but it kinda works and it is better than nothing. Read of if anyone is interested and/or in my same situation:

1- I went to G-Hub and created a special profile for MudRunner. It switches to this profile whenever I launch the game, and goes back to the default profile after I quit the game. This is important because we will be remapping some keys and we want the default profile to be intact for other games.

2- I remapped both of my the paddle shifters on my wheel to "R", like so:

3- These are the controls that im using in the game:

4- Now when you're driving, just click on any of the paddle shifters and then move your mouse to the desired gear. It's like using a gear stick, but instead you're using your mouse. This way you don't need to use the keyboard at all. But if you still want the best possible experience, you have to buy the stick shifter.

You could try using something like 'JoyToKey' which will not only let you rebind your paddles/buttons to any key but can also assign mouse movements to a paddle or button...like a macro so to speak.i.e. have a button set to move the mouse down, right, up to change from first to second....you could maybe assign all the mouse movements to the direction pad for instance or set a button to act as a 'shift key' so that you can map all the mouse movements to the paddles.
Fiddly but do-able i guess.

My bad I did misread.

The shifter is worth it, if you have the extra cash. I don't like to use it for racing games because it is unpredictable sometimes (won't go into gear or I suck, probably the later). It's great for this and games like Trucking Sim

For someone who wants to do this too and doesn´t own a Logitech: you can use a program AntiMicro for remaping the keys of the wheel. There is also a new version AntiMicroX, but the old one works perfectly fine too.

For the sake of completeness - SpintiresMod could be found on several Spintires/MudRunner/SnowRunner mods websites. Supporting all 3 games the tool officially is offered here[stmods.org].

It would be interesting to see if the tool could help in this matter, but I personally have no experience with that. Nevertheless, it's a tool that, in my opinion, should be installed with MudRunner as it adds technical things to the game.

In a Steam guide I offer further help for its installation with a step-by-step instruction.

EDIT: updated link, so that all previous versions and their descriptions are displayed as well

Thank you all for sharing very useful information! I'm not using a steering wheel (yet), but this thread will definitely help in the future!
