Since the game works via peer-to-peer (P2P) and any player can take the role of the host and it's not dependent on an external server (e.g. of the developer), it should work at all times.
In order for multiplayer mode to work properly with all its features, MudRunner makes use of the Steam infrastructure - and as long as this doesn't change fundamentally, the game should work anytime.
It's interesting, though, what circumstances cause a timeout. (I never had the case myself, but tried testing it...)
Personally, I would try to narrow down the cause of the problem - which one of you is actually causing the problem (can each of you join any other game?). Or maybe it works the other way around - with the other person taking the role of the host? (it's recommended if the person with the faster upload speed takes the role of the host).
I also provide some tips for multiplayer mode in a guide.
Not sure as to why youre so confident its working LeeQuid. Unless youre using a hamachi or tungle or some other 3rd party to play and host your game beyond steam... Because steam throws everyone out but the host and leaves the others in the lobby.
From what I experienced on various machines and configurations so far nothing came up with strange connection issues. No VPN method or third-party connection or hosting tool has ever been used. Let's say 'default/standard networking protocols' (unspecified in detail, but already pre-installed in Windows 7/10/11, whichever one is used) should be enough. True, router/network settings are the next thing that could play a role, and the whole implementation could get even more complex. Without having a comprehensive knowledge of networking technology, but being eager to solve the problem, I would try to find out, what's happening by a procedure of exclusion then - what have you already tried and can therefore be ruled out 100%...
Timeouts or connection issues can happen in different cases, but with my understanding of computer technology it's mostly caused by some external circumstances, not the game itself (and also, not every game and software uses the same connection methods). I've read your opened topic as well, but if no evildoer could be located easily, it would be best to narrow down the problem to a few causes... can you test the game on a second machine? or maybe save an OS image and do a fresh Windows + MudRunner installation comparing both computer configurations?
If possible, you could first try to start a multiplayer session on the same network (like locally) to narrow down a few possible weak points. In this case, Steam could be using your local area network for some connection tasks to each other.
ROUTERS these days are modem routers and automatically port forward for games. Very VERY few games that Im aware are not port forwarded automatically especially when you allow through the firewall.
4 different people in two different countries can not play together on the STEAM version.
Aint no way Im doing a fresh install to play this old game.
Something isnt right with mudrunner for it not to work on MULTIPLE PCS who all try to host in TWO DIFFERENT Countries rather its just so old that it doesnt port forward the ports on new modem routers or the games Multiplayer is in fact Broken and most people playing this either got it when it first came out and have gotten it to work from the start or theyre newer and probably using a 3rd party.
Have you tried uninstalling Mudrunner and running a fresh install to see if Multiplayer doesn't work?
The Question is simple Leequid DOES Multiplayer still work. In the aspect of a player should be able to download the game and host a game right out of the box without need to do all sorts of workaround shenanigans to force it to work?
I think the short answer to this question should be NO Multiplayer does not function anymore for this game unless you had previously or host 3rd Party.
Like I said I appreciate your reply and your love for the game because youre evidentally willing to jump through hoops to force it to work VS saying Multiplayer doesnt actually work in the game anymore. If you have to force it work its not really working its Broken and that's with all due respect.
Its not a big deal I bought it for all of us on the sale. Cool game but it seems not to have the updates to run on peoples machines the Multiplayer portion of the game.
It should be updated or they should let people know HOW TO GET MULTIPLAYER TO WORK since they do not seem to let people know by default its not functioning as a Multiplayer portion of a game should be. It should work when you download it from the start. You shouldnt have to go and mess with settings and reinstall windows and all that.
I understand that it´s leaving i weird Impression, since 2 of your Friends encouter also Issues with it at the same time. But let´s be honest here: Chances are higher that these Problems are related to Issues on your´s respective end, than any other Thing, when hundreds of People are able to host and join Multiplayer Sessions everyday.
By what you are describing, one particular Thing comes to my Mind: to some extend this sounds like a somewhat popular Issue myself and many others have encounterd when, in the Settings-Menu the "Crossplay enabled" Option is checked. Since i have trouble with connecting to Lobbys almost everytime when this Option is enabled (Even if all Participants are on PC)
So you and your Friends could give this a try. And btw.. that you can´t see the Profile Pictures off other Players is somewhat normal.. sometimes they are visible, sometimes not. But that has no other impact.. at least not for me.
A very early fix was to not enable the feature in the first place if you didn't need it, and if you did, then unfortunately reinstall the game completely. If the problem with deactivation and activation can be solved more easily in the meantime, all the better.
So, the chance is given that this could occur if Crossplay is switched on. At least I read about some connection problems related to Crossplay.
If simply switching off Crossplay would not lead to a solution, but has been switched on before at any time, you could continue reading my post about a possible solution to a different problem related to Crossplay.
If you want more information about Crossplay, please check out this discussion.
Also, the game has its limits in multiplayer mode, unfortunately. So, better be prepared. You can't simply use unoccupied vehicles, each player has their own vehicle fleet. Also only active vehicles of others are shown, the shadow-transparent thing is normal, sadly. In a guide I've put together things, that might help a little... My post about multiplayer sync. could also be relevant for you then.
You will probably experience some confusion and hurdles starting with multiplayer mode. I also had a lot of troubles in the beginning, but things can be managed somehow. In the end, the reward for all the effort and trouble is a great game with which you can have many hours of great entertainment. With the guide I offer, I hope people can get started much smoother. To avoid more confusion I suggest to check out chapter Managing the multiplayer mode in the Steam guide Start Assistance :)
