Spintires getting regular updates, Mudrunner isn't?
Tried to get friends to buy Mudrunner but at this point is Spintires the better option? Spintires is getting regular updates but seems like Mudrunner is abandoned?

It creates so much confusion. I'm wondering this myself, this game used to be called spintires mudrunner, it was basically the SAME GAME with some extra content. I still don't understand which version I'm supposed to be playing.

Yeah that's exactly it. At the moment it seems Spintires is the only one being updated.

Doesn't make sense that a 6 year old game "Spintires" is getting updates over a 3 year old game "Mudrunner". Sounds shady to me. If the Developer thinks that their not going to update Mudrunner as a tactic to drive me to that Communist owned platform "Epic" to purchase Snowrunner, think again.

This is exactly the reason that brought me here today. Scratching my head wondering why I bought this game now. Thought it was supposed to replace the other...

Mudrunner has been replaced with it's sequel Snowrunner. And as is the case whenever a sequel for a game is released, the previous game is no longer worked on. Spintires on the other hand has not had a sequel. So they have reason to keep updating it to promote sales. If Spintires were to ever have a sequel you can be sure that it would stop getting updates as well.

Its a mess but long and short is that Spintires is released under a different publisher. When Mudrunner came out it was released by Focus-Home and Saber Interactive. Snowrunner is the sequel so I don't see them doing any more development on Mudrunner now. Snowrunner captures it all and more. Its bizarre where the franchise is split between two publishers and they must have released rights to Spintires so they can keep developing it.

It has snow in it but it is still very much a mud game just like mudrunner is (only 1/3rd of the maps have snow). What you describe is pretty much the way it has worked for almost every game development company that has ever existed. As they approach the release of a sequel to a game they abandon the previous game. That is generally just the practical way of allocating manpower in a software development company. To continue working on the previous game in a series after the release of a sequel is not economical.
Original devs won't update Mudrunner because they decided to just screw the Steam community and release their new game Snowrunner as epic exclusive. They are working on that.

Spintires is getting new updates from a random new dev, but I feel like every new update just breaks something else.

Thanks, that's some interesting history. Shame all the legal matters had to get in the way of just creating a fun game. With all the fantastic workshop inventory, I think I'll just be content to play whatever I can on Spintires/Mudrunner, and at this point just be done with the series. It was definitely fun while it lasted.

Spintires isn't getting regular updates. It's never been updated other than graphics and some tweaks. It's taken 5 years to get a map or two and 6 years to get the first vehicle DLC for it. But aside from that it's the *same* game with nothing added. It's a NEW game they should be making! There's no map DLC or extra vehicles like MR gave us for free.

Mudrunner is NOT the same game from Spintires ok, OoVee sold a temp license to Saber to make Mudrunner, Which is why it has the ST in the title because OoVee owned the license., to finish the state that ST was left in and prove they could. more or less. Pavel is with them. Then they went off and made SR which is *their* game. You will notice that ST has a copyright on it now and SR has Saber's own copyright.

Fully aware of the history I've owned Spintires since day 1 and seen all the drama on Oovee's forums. But as a player Spintires is getting new DLC and updates so I guess that's the one to go with now.

Damn, I just bought Mudrunner.

In all honesty this game does need an update. Its buggy and devs have gone silent. So either support your game or its abandonware.
