How and why did you come to think the scale of the game is "huge"? Its pretty small.
Well the maps are pretty small. A square km. It just feels big when you roll at snail speed.
Besides if your toiling in mud or water or a heavy load it could be the size of Australia if you get stuck. Plus it's not rendering moving objects,buildings, planes etc,etc. Just shows you that not all good things come in big packages

That's a classic! If I'm not mistaken all the assets in the game were generated procedurally. In other words, there are no textures or models. It's all code.
