Both garage trailers across the Deluge... with the C-256.
Okay, so I know the C-256 doesn't get a lot of love from most players. Me, I'm a big fan of using the RWD-only trucks because it's a much more challenging drive, and I've long felt that in the right hands the one star RWD trucks are just as good and capable as the AWD ones. (I absolutely adore the 256). So last time out I took a B-130 across the Deluge by itself all the way to the garage, and made it. This time, I wanted a real challenge. Would it be possible to haul both the garage trailers across the map and unlock the garage with nothing but the C-256? Most people complain that they can't get the C-256 out of the yard by itself, I thought it would be a lot of fun trying to haul a road train with it.

I will be honest, it took a few attempts. The game is not only glitchy sometimes with the fallen tree branches (which the Deluge is absolutely carpeted with), but it also absolutely HATES what I was trying to do... namely hitch onto one long trailer and then winch onto the next to tow them both at the same time. Dunno if it's all long trailers or just the garage ones, but the collision boxes get really twitchy some times and lock together when you try and do a dual tow. I lost more attempts to glitches than to getting stuck by a long way.

Anyways, first thing in the morning, I got hitched up and set off -

First obstacle, no worries. I know my way across this bit no problem, and the truck was doing fine.

Then we're off to the small island. The winch is going to become much more involved in the trip now...

The trip to the big island is one of the hardest bits, thanks to the fast-moving water. The C-256 has no problem with it though.

Crossing the island was a pain in the @$$. It is so covered in branches and crap that most of the day/night was 'release back trailer, winch past obstacle, winch back onto second trailer, pull forwards, repeat.' The problem I found was that every silly thing I had to get the truck over was then an obstacle for two trailers to ALSO get over. Plus I gambled on a shortcut rather than my regular route. Either way, it took a while but I made it to the watchpoint.

I actually got stuck between those damned trees. Had to release the last trailer, back into it to push it off the tree, then use the side winch on the trailer to kick it over slightly so I could rehook it and get it through. The last water crossing went surprisingly well, and after half a night getting myself unstuck from mud, I was back on tarmac again, hooray.

After that, it was easy. Made it to the garage no problem, unlocked the first trailer, hooked onto the second, and then I had an open garage.

I was having so much fun with the 256 that I decided to keep going. Slapped a crane cart on it, grabbed some fuel and a load of logs at the other end of the map, and delivered them back across for good measure.

For the record I am now back on the other side of the river, with the truck parked at the garage and getting ready to go get the second load of logs to take over.

"It ain't the load, it's how you drive it." Man I love the C-256. It's a brilliant truck. :)

EDIT - btw, yes it was done on hardcore.

Nice! Great work on documenting that epic struggle.

I gave your B130 Deluge challenge a shot. I'm not afraid of any RWD truck but lack of diff lock in this version gives me the willies.

I think I need to work on my line more... I've never really liked the northern approach and even shutting down the engine and submarining it, I didn't make it. I think I know where I went wrong though, and will have another go. It was pretty arrogant to assume I could do it successfully first try. :)

Next up, the C256 dual trailer challenge. Thanks again for throwing down the guantlet, this will be 'interesting'!

Yeah that was tough as nails. As you say, a LOT of creeping forward then winching it up. I played it very carefully coming out of the river, as I didn't want to get bogged just short of the road with nothing to winch to. I ended up nearly having a heart attack as I stupidly roared into the garage and bogged it with the trailers just outside. A little back and forth finessing and all done.

Okay I have more respect for the 256 now. It's not gutless, it just struggles with traction and getting caught up on/in things. I'll have to give her another chance or two.

Sadly, I rolled it in the river delivering the first load, so I'm not going to make the solo unassissted challenge. My hats off to you on that one, congratulations.

Thanks again for putting up the challenge, that was fun!

Hell yeah, my deluge runs were the best moments i ever spent in this game. I absolutely LOVE the 256. Best frigging truck in the game, bar none... if you can drive it. Congrats on joining the elite few who can actually drive it, you earned it.

You want a new challege, I'll give you the one 256 challenge I never managed - 256 up to the top of any of the three mountains on the Island map. Let me know if you work it out, I want that so bad I can taste it...

iheartmyocd -- I absolutely love your 1 star C-256 challenges. So far I completed 5 of the 6 base maps on hardcore using just the C-256... there were some tough slogs (and exhilaration!) but none of those maps compare to Deluge. With Deluge I got both trailers across in separate trips and unlocked the garage. Now I have a load of small logs (not even attempting with the small log trailer) but I just can't find a do-able route back across to the lumber mill. I've tried crossing at the north and south areas but the swift current seems to be my issue. I find myself fighting against it and end up rolling the truck or submerging and killing the engine with damage. Can you offer some advice on a route back across? The C-256 with no attachments was fairly easy (presumably no drag in the current) but with the crane carriage + logs it is killing me.

Huh, I made it across the river in the little 3-flat hop (by the lumber mill) to the beach beside the road on the other side, when fully loaded with short logs, then went back the same route I took the trailers. It's tricky as hell but is doable.

By 3-flat hop I mean the three flat spots (really, really mini islands), across the river. There is a shallow route, apart from right on the beach by the lumber mill where there's a hole. It's narrow and needs a lot of care and current battling, but you can make it. I also think (if I remember right) that there is a potential way back somewhere around the middle, but I've not explored it all that much. EIther way, good luck and I'm glad there's another enthusiast who enjoys the true challenge of taking the 256 into places that scare hell out of even the 6x6s!

Btw, if you want a REAL thrill-ride with the C-256, I'm in the middle doing it on this mod map -

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1476385583

I've gotten all of the check points, unlocked the garage, and completed one lumber mill completely so far... and it's taken ages. Definitely the most challenging drive I've ever had with it.

Thanks a lot, I will give the 3-flat hop a go. And I'll note La Luna9 for the future. As you mentioned in another thread, it's a shame that American Wilds doesn't have a 1 star truck with abilities like the C-256. I will probably do the AW maps with the 256 because it is an awesome vehicle and really boosts the challenge factor!
