Can you split your army?

Hey everyone I just started this game and i's quite fun. One thing I have trouble with is controlling my army and priests. I saw there's a menu for some basic commands, but I think no matter what I do they always seem to try and follow me around one way or another. That or they all seems to stay on one point.
So I wonder is there a way to split them up and have them stay that way? Like have a couple of soldiers and priests defend one side and then have the other guys follow me to the other side or so.
