How do I add players?

I'm trying to play local co-op with 2 players and 2 Xbox One controllers. I can start a game, but I can't get the second player in. What is the magic secret to getting the second player in?

Hi, apologies for slow response. You just need to start the game in "Local" multiplayer mode and press A on the other controller during the night. If this doesn't work please check gamepads controls mapping in the game's options.

i also bought the game on the nintendo switch just recently. but it doesnt let me play it with a single controller. you need both controllers to play a single character. is this some kind of bug? or is the nintendo switch version just designed to use the twin stick of the two separate controllers?
