I've only played as Gal and Ricardo so far. Gal is so versatile and fast you're able to grab several small enemies before they even have a chance to attack you (Like the muay thai birds) while Ricard is well... Ricardo, his moveset is limited but he has tons of armor and he can throw pretty much everyone at the cost of being quite slow (So he can for example take down Minotauro relatively fast but muay thai birds will be quite more difficult to deal with).
There isn't much more to this than to just "Get good" and learn at least one route well enough that nothing's a surprise to you. You also gotta make sure to explode as many enemies as possible, eat food while at full HP and not lose any lives during each stage because all the bonus points you get from all that sum up quite fast. You can reach the last stage with like 10 lives or so once you're good enough (And you'll often need them, the last stage is always quite brutal).
Escape > Don't Help the girl > Go straigh in the forest
The route is:
Go straight -> Save the Girl -> Take the Forest Shortcut
The only parts that should really trouble you is the unavoidable Death Island, but you can pull enemy by enemy.
All in all, learn the route, use food smartly and practice the bosses/stages that give you the most trouble.
I actually recommend Ricardo since his combos are quite easy and he's very good at Crowd Control with his jumping grab and special. Good luck!
