Simon the Sorcerer: 25th Anniversary Edition

Simon the Sorcerer: 25th Anniversary Edition

Bought - very early points
Hey, just picked the first 2 Simon the sorcerers up because like many I played when I was younger. Now a few points I need to mention for anyone considering buying these games.

- The remastered version is terribly done, the worst remastered version of any game you will have ever seen. The face and graphics have a horrible overlay making the game unplayable. Now if you want to play it in original format like me, you can.

- They added hotspots, the worst thing you can do to any point and click adventure game is to add hotspots, the whole point of a pnc is that the game needs to be hard and make you think, adding these to these 2 games is pathetic. Luckily they can be removed in the settings.

- They have added terrible icons which you can not remove or turn off, this is making me consider refunding these games. Seriously, if you are going to remaster a point and click game, do it properly. I am going to work now, but will be seriously considering getting my money back because of this. To the developers, check out monkey island remastered, that is how you remaster a game.

Apart from those points, if you want to play in original format it may be playable for you, but DO NOT buy these games for the remastered version because they ARE NOT remastered, but rather spoiled.

The new icons and hotspots are part of the new control system - which most users prefer. We think that Pixel Hunting is not the best part of Point and Click adventure games :)

When you change the controls under the menu 'Settings' to 'Classic', the new action icons replace the cursor icon only when selecting an action - exactly like the original Simon the Sorcerer 2. So we do the same here also for Simon the Sorcerer 1 in this new edition.
But, the new update (Version 1.0.1.0) now live for both games, includes the option to play with classic controls without the new icons.

I am probably not going to refund this game as I am a massive Simon the Sorcerer fan and have a really soft spot for adventure games, however, I must admit that those icons that they added are atrocious and they do feel out of place, I wish there was an option to remove them.

What icons are you talking about? I haven't played the originals in DOS, at least it was very long ago and just a little.
Are you about action icons(controls)? Can you show a screenshot from original for comparison?

How is new music? Any gameplay videos from remastered version?
Fun fact - hotspots were in original game (press F10)

The original had a plain pointer whereas the anniversary version boasts those graphical action icons, i.e. walk to, pick up have been "enriched" with their visual counterparts.

Original:

Remastered (check out the boots where the dragon lies):

It is all probably very subjective, to me personally those icons feel childish, as in they look like taken straight from a children's coloring book.

Yeah, it feels subjective to me as well. But i agree that the looks of them is not perfect and "stands out" of the game, they should redraw those cursors from scratch, shouldn't be too hard really!

If you look on app store/google play you can see that these are ports from touch screen versions for phones/tablets that came out a couple of years ago...

Nothing bad in that per se, i still wait for Goblins ports to show up on Steam
A developer of this app has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Do you strongly believe there should be an option to disable it ?

Yes. The new cursors are ugly as sin, in both 1 & 2. Also if your going to add dialog text at least fix them in the English and German versions, ScummVM removes them for a reason you know.

Also allow us to remove the top two icons from the screen when in classic mode, as for vetran players they arn't needed.

Then we just need to talk about the menus.

You are wrong, adding hotspots to any point and click adventure completely spoils the game as a whole. You are making the gameplay too easy and hotspots are just a poor idea. The thing people want is for pnc games to be difficult, "pixel hunting" as you put it is all part of this and by removing that you are removing the thought process and making the gamesplay lose any originality. Look it's upto you guys, they are your games... But as someone who owns every single pnc on steam and with 20+ years playing them, take it from me, the overlay for graphics is horrific and the hotspots and icons turn a classic game/games into junk.
If you can't disable the horrific icons, you will lose alot of customers.
I will leave this 1 week, if these points are not fixed you will lose me for one as a customer.

The hotspots and new actions overlay (only done for Simon the Sorcerer 2 new edition) can already be removed by changing the controls under settings to "Classic".
We will soon look into offering the Classic controls without the new icons.
So it's really only 1 point left from your list ?

BTW- the original games are included for FREE for Windows, macOS and Linux (should be available as FREE DLC in a few days).
