Child friendly
Hi all, I've got 2 young sons (6 & 9) and they've seen this game and really liked the trailer. I said I'd consider buying it on steam but I'm seeing the psychological horror tag on the game. Do you think that this game is child friendly? Got to admit it looks great but I don't want to upset my sons when they go back to their mum.

Thanks in advance 🙂

I imagine the darker elements might go over their head. It gets deep on the emotional side, and if you don't mind spoilers, I can explain why it has that tag.

My eldest is quite switched on. Do you think it deserves the tag? he'd want to play it to the end 100%

The ending involves the revelation that the Bugsnax are parasites where, if you eat enough of them (this only happens if you don't do the sidequests and fail to save people in the ending stretch) your body comes apart into more Bugsnax. This is why it's psychological horror. So uh. Yeah.

It's not super intense as it sounds, the bad ending is SAD but.

I mean this is the worst of it. Otherwise it does discuss some very real issues (Wambus and Triffany are dealing with a strained marriage and their sidequests help bring them together as a result).

Thank you so much for the explanation. I think he'd be fine with that. Really appreciate your help :D:

No problem! It's a legitimately good game, and I hope you all have fun.

If your children are sensitive, the game is not for them. I am a sensitive young adult, this game traumatized me psychologically. I felt so sorry for the cute bugsnax.

I... Why do you feel sorry for the parasites that cause addiction and want to be devoured so they can breed by breaking down bodies into more Bugsnax?

Thank you for posting that. I wondered what would happen for the worst ending, but just couldn't bring myself to actually do it.

No. The parasites are grumps that have occupied the island and started to hunt and eat the poor little bugsnacks.

...The Bugsnax are literal parasites that want to be eaten in order to infest bodies and kill people. If you encountered them, they would kill you. Just because it's cute doesn't make it not a parasite. Like, this is canon TEXT in the game.

I look at actions, not words. In fact, grumps hunted for bugsnacks, and bugsnacks didn't want to be eaten so they ran away or defended themselves. The bugsnacks didn't cause any harm to grumps until the end of the game when they lost their patience and began to retaliate.

Did you miss the ENTIRE ENDING where they literally swarm the camp because they want to be eaten, including the Bad End where they force themselves down throats? Because Lizbert was holding them back and couldn't anymore? Lizbert, who was like that because SHE was swarmed? For "looking at actions, not words" you don't seem to realize that we get hints of this early on. Wambus mentions being harassed by Shishkabugs, who don't even like ketchup. Because that's what they do.

I'm just a random wanderer ... but I believe you're being trolled by someone roleplaying as a "Bugsnax activist".

I don't necessarily think that's it. The game gives little explanation for why there are "good" Bugsnax (Sprout and the Kweebles in the endgame) or why the Bugsnax react with play and curiosity when it wouldn't be beneficial if their main goal is to be eaten. They are also docile with Gramble, who does not present any harm, and even follow him around. I overall feel there are important points to Bugsnax as a species before writing them off as "all evil". Nature is maybe cruel, but not evil and so aren't real life parasites. They try to ensure their way of survival in some way, yes. Dumbing Bugsnax down as "all evil" out to kill the main characters!!! ending did not sit right with me anyway. They also left Sprout behind, poor child.

Maybe those bugsnax still remember from when they were grumps? The experiment, forgot their name, the purple one did seemed to show they still remembered the anatomy of limbs. So maybe other parts of a grump is remembered too?
